Fear had completely scrambled Jade's mind. She didn't believe for a second that Vivienne was being kind. Assuming Vivienne was just terrified and trying to cling to Preston for survival, she lashed out. "No! Preston is supposed to protect me! You don't get to steal him!"

Vivienne's face hardened. "Listen to me, Jade. Preston is not a good person. He didn't offer to take you to the safe room to save you; he wants to use you to lure the others out. If you listen to him and something goes wrong, everyone will blame you."

"Are you two alright?"

As they spoke, Preston and Kael navigated through the corridor and stepped behind Trellis Gate.

"Miss Cavanaugh, the situation has changed. We're going to have to find another way."

The two men had heard everything Vivienne said from a few feet away, but Preston remained completely unreadable, projecting the flawless image of an elegant gentleman.

"Preston!" Jade broke down in a panic, shoving Vivienne aside to throw herself at Preston.

Without missing a beat, Preston raised an arm, smoothly blocking her advance.

Jade grabbed onto his sleeve anyway. "Preston, the safe room is the only secure place left! If we move fast, they won't be able to catch us."

Preston frowned. "I'm not sure that's a good idea."

Desperate for his protection, Jade pleaded, "Please, let's just try. I'm begging you."

Preston cast a glance at Vivienne, a faint smile touching his lips. "Alright. We'll do it your way for now."

Visibly relieved, Jade suddenly remembered something. She pointed an accusing finger at Vivienne. "Preston, she was just saying terrible things about you. Don't bring her."

Vivienne let out a cold laugh.

"What are you laughing at?"

Jade hadn't actually planned on completely ditching Vivienne, but since Vivienne had rejected her earlier pleas for help, Jade wanted to assert some dominance. Seeing Vivienne not only refuse to back down but actively mock her sent Jade into a renewed fit of rage.

Vivienne replied casually, "I'm just laughing at the fact that the Cavanaugh matriarch is one of the most respected, iron-willed women in Stormhollow, yet she somehow raised someone as spineless as you."

Based on what Jade just insisted, even if Preston got everyone in the safe room killed tonight, the Cavanaugh family would be left taking the blame.
