Cyril easily saw through her maneuver and nodded along. "Yes."

Vivienne leaned in, eyes wide with curiosity. "How did he punish you?"

At the mention of this, Cyril thought of something. He lifted his eyelids, studying her. "What did you say to Grandfather?"

Vivienne looked the picture of innocence. "I didn't say anything."

"A hundred lashes?!" Vivienne rested her hand against her jaw and sucked in a sharp breath. Just thinking about it made her skin crawl.

Vivienne's eyes were fixed stubbornly on the secret of the box. "Just tell me! I'll go crazy if you don't."

Unable to meet those sparkling, eager eyes, Cyril looked down to avoid them, only to be met with her bandaged foot resting against him.
