"Cyril? Vivienne?"
Dorian twisted the knob, only realizing the door was locked from the inside when it refused to budge. He raised a hand to knock, but suddenly heard a sharp smack ring out from within the room.
Dorian froze. That sounded suspiciously like a slap to the face.
Were Vivienne and Cyril fighting?
He hesitated, suppressing his rising suspicion, and raised his hand to knock again.
Click—
The handle turned, and Cyril pulled the door open, stepping out.
"Father."
Dorian stared at him, taken aback. "Cyril, you..."
Cyril's hair was disheveled, and the angry red outline of a handprint stained his cheek, the bruises already beginning to bead with tiny drops of blood.
Cyril lowered his eyes. "It's nothing. Let's go back." With that, he turned and headed down the stairs of Whitestone Lodge.
Dorian's expression shifted. He glanced back toward the bedroom, hesitated for a moment, and walked in. "Vivienne, did you hit Cyril?"
Vivienne, still burning with rage, snapped back, "Yeah, I hit him!"
Dorian hadn't expected her to be so brazen about it. His face hardened. "What did he do to make you strike him that hard?"
Vivienne crossed her arms, entirely unrepentant. "He had it coming!"
"You..."
"Mr. Ravenshire, please don't be angry. Miss Lexton is still recovering from her injuries, please don't take it to heart." Marissa, terrified Vivienne would offend the older man, quickly stepped in with a placating smile to smooth things over.
Dorian had fully intended to reprimand Vivienne, but Marissa's intervention cooled his temper.
Vivienne was Grandfather's prized possession right now. If word got out that he had scolded her, the old man would probably tear into him again.
