"Play the victim? Beg for her pity?" Alaric frowned, looking as if he had just heard something utterly vile.
"What exactly is so pathetic about me? What on earth makes me worthy of pity?"
Wesley was completely speechless. A man as fiercely proud as Alaric would never stoop to such cheap, manipulative tactics.
Alaric lifted his gaze to the courtyard wall. Thanks to Wesley's unintended reminder, he realized that Whitestone Lodge was only a few steps away from the side courtyard. With a ladder, someone could easily scale the wall and climb right onto the lodge's windowsill barehanded.
He considered this for a moment before pointing toward the side courtyard. "Have the masons push the outer wall of Vellmont Lodge out by ten feet and build it higher."
He might not be the type to sneak into a woman's bedroom at night, but that didn't mean other men wouldn't try. It was always best to guard against those with ulterior motives.
"Yes, sir."
Wesley replied with a deadpan expression, feeling thoroughly defeated. Alaric's sudden display of moral superiority made him feel like absolute garbage in comparison.
Returning to Wolfram Manor, Alaric sat at his desk and prepared his premium fountain pen.
Wesley crossed his arms, amused. The man didn't know how to coax a woman, and he refused to scale a wall to see her. He deserved to suffer in unrequited love.
With the mindset of watching a trainwreck unfold, Wesley leaned closer to the desk, only to be left dumbfounded when he saw the words 'Letter of Apology' written at the top of the parchment.
"Sir, what is this?"
A sliver of sunlight slipped through the bamboo blinds, casting a golden hue over the rich, dark ink. Alaric lowered his eyes, his eyelashes turning into translucent threads of gold in the light.
"Since she doesn't want to see me, I'll write her an apology first."
Wesley was speechless.
...
Crown Hospital.
The sheer curtains billowed in the summer breeze, carrying the faint, sterile scent of antiseptic throughout the room.
Julian stared blankly at the ceiling. He had been awake for a while, but because he could hear Caspian's booming curses coming from the next room, he chose to remain completely silent.
