Alaric remained entirely unfazed, sipping his tea as if Cyril's new deployment had absolutely nothing to do with him.
The meeting adjourned. Caspian kept his three granddaughters behind in The Private Parlor while the men dispersed to their respective wings of the estate.
With Cyril's new position acting as a counterbalance, Dorian no longer harbored any visible resentment over Caspian's blatant favoritism toward Alaric. As they exited the Main Hall, Dorian even struck up a polite conversation with him.
"Alaric, the 313th Division was your father's life's work. You have to seize this opportunity. Try to bring home a military merit, just like Cyril will."
Everyone present could see right through Dorian's fake pleasantries. The 313th Division was notorious for its astronomical casualty rate. Encouraging Alaric to chase merits was essentially telling him to go get himself killed.
Alaric's expression remained bored. "There's no need to worry yourself, Dorian. I know exactly what I'm doing."
With a flawless, elegant nod, Alaric turned and walked down the corridor.
Lucian watched him for a second, his mind racing, before hurrying after him.
Benedict rolled his eyes at Dorian and clapped Cyril heavily on the shoulder, holding no grudges. "Work hard out there. The Shadow Chamber has outposts all over Merriton City. I'll have Aurelia compile a list of emergency contacts and pass them to you. If you run into any trouble you can't handle, you come straight to me."
Cyril nodded respectfully. "Thank you, Benedict."
"Don't mention it." Benedict turned and tugged at Talia's sleeve. "Come on, let's head to your place for a bit."
Talia shot a contemplative look at Cyril before following Benedict out of the main courtyard.
Dorian stared at Benedict's retreating back, his eyes narrowing maliciously. "Benedict is certainly playing nice with you."
Cyril kept his tone perfectly neutral. "He's always been a very warm person."
A cold, sharp glint flashed in Dorian's eyes. "Before you leave, I'll have Moira Nash put together a list of my closest allies in the Merriton Naval Guard. Make sure you build relationships with them."
Cyril's expression shifted slightly. "You don't trust Benedict?"
Dorian turned back to his son. Seeing the clear admiration and reliance in Cyril's eyes, a rare surge of paternal instinct washed over him.
"Remember this, Cyril. In this house, you cannot afford to trust anyone."
