Boom.
The words struck like a bomb. The color drained from Victoria's face as the bedrock of her beliefs shattered. She sprang up, completely unhinged. "Impossible! You little bastard, you dare sling mud at my son?!"
Cyril remained perfectly composed. "When I first entered Obsidian Estate, Grandpa had Dr. Cole give me an antidote injection. Out of curiosity, I asked the doctor about it privately. That's when I found out Grandpa was poisoned eight years ago. Dr. Cole didn't give me the details, only that Grandpa survived because he already had antibodies in his system."
The Patriarch had been poisoned? Why hadn't they known?
Victoria's face grew incredibly grim as she scrutinized Cyril.
"Why should I believe a word you say? Even if the old man was poisoned, what does that have to do with Jaxen? Do you have any proof?"
"Of course I have proof," Cyril replied smoothly. "I have a recording of Jaxen admitting to the poisoning himself. If you don't believe me, why don't you give him a call?"
Victoria's eyes darkened. She absentmindedly adjusted her collar and slowly sat up straighter. "If you're lying to me..."
"You can find out if I'm lying with a single phone call," Cyril said. "But you know how people are. Jaxen had the nerve to try and kill his own grandfather; I just worry he won't tell his own mother the truth."
Victoria gritted her teeth. "A bastard like you thinks you can drive a wedge between me and my son?"
"As long as you're confident," Cyril smiled, standing up. "Attempted murder of the Patriarch is a capital offense. To cover his tracks, Jaxen framed the other families involved in the highway incident. Out of trust, Grandpa never suspected him. Tell me, if I hand my evidence over to Grandpa, do you think Jaxen will ever be allowed to return in this lifetime?"
Victoria's fingers curled into fists, her nails digging into the soft leather of the sofa.
His goal accomplished, Cyril offered a polite nod. "That's all I came to say. Whether you believe it or not is entirely up to you."
He walked toward the door, then paused as if remembering something. He glanced back at her, his eyes filled with pure disgust. "Oh, by the way, I brought you a gift. I do hope you enjoy it."
Victoria looked up, but Cyril had already disappeared through the doorway.
"..."
A moment later, the front door opened again. Several burly men hauled a massive, heavy object into the room. It was draped entirely in black cloth.
Moira directed the men to set it down in the center of the living room. Her expression was entirely mechanical. "Mrs. Ravenshire, this is a gift from Mr. Cyril."
