The temperature in the room instantly plummeted below freezing.
After a long, tense standoff, Victoria let out a cold laugh. "Fine. It's true what they say: the dog that bites doesn't bark. I misjudged you. If you've got such a spine, then just wait. Let's see how arrogant you are when you're backed into a corner with nothing left."
Cyril crumpled the tissue into a ball and slipped it into his pocket, his tone conversational. "We could make a different kind of deal."
Victoria scoffed. She lifted her chin, gesturing toward the cigarette pack on the coffee table with a flick of two fingers.
Cyril glanced at it, completely unmoved.
It really was true—terrible people just grew older. To think she was still foolishly trying to control him.
He spoke with infuriating calm. "You don't want Jaxen to come back, then."
Victoria's expression shifted violently. She narrowed her eyes, assessing him. "You're living the high life at Obsidian Estate now. Why would you ever genuinely help Jaxen return?"
Everyone knew Jaxen was her ultimate weakness. Victoria knew it too, which was why she wouldn't throw away any opportunity, even if she suspected Cyril had ulterior motives.
Cyril understood this perfectly, which was why her threats held no power over him. Years ago, Victoria had exploited his weakness, using Summer Hollis as leverage to force his compliance.
Now, his weakness had become his armor, and it was time for Victoria to taste the same medicine.
"Obsidian Estate is treacherous. It's nowhere near as peaceful as it seems," Cyril said coolly. "You holding my secret is like a guillotine hanging over my neck. I need to find a way to remove the blade."
Victoria wasn't buying it. "What does that have to do with Jaxen coming home?"
"Everything," Cyril replied. "He is your weak spot. If I have him as leverage, you'll be a good girl and keep your mouth shut."
Her anger flared instantly. No mother could remain calm hearing her child used as a threat.
