"What lingerie?!" Serena panicked, her carefully crafted composure shattering. "Stop spouting nonsense!"
Chloe sneered. "Why are you screaming? You should be asking yourself that. Why on earth would she choose such a cheap, trashy outfit for a formal event? If you ask me, you can't blame anyone else. If a girl dresses like a slut, she's practically begging for men to act on it."
"You—!" Serena opened her mouth to scream, but the sudden reminder of her ultimate goal forced her to swallow the venom.
"Me what? Am I wrong? The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Thank God our family hasn't officially tied the knot with you yet, or we'd be a laughingstock."
"Not officially tied the knot?" The man who had been apologizing breathed a massive sigh of relief. "So, she isn't related to you, sir?"
Stanford's face was terrifyingly dark.
At this point, it was impossible for him not to realize what those brats were playing at.
If he denied the relationship now, the marriage was dead in the water, but his dignity would survive.
If he admitted they were family, tomorrow's headlines would feature his stepdaughter strutting around in lingerie, getting played with by his own subordinates.
Cameron hadn't expected the old man to actually hesitate. After weighing the odds, he stood up and looked at Leland, who had remained perfectly silent.
"Uncle Leland, if this gets out, it ruins our family's reputation. What do you think?"
Leland saw through the entire charade with absolute clarity. He cast a freezing glare at Stanford. "Stop making a scene at your age."
Stanford’s expression grew even uglier. Though he was older than Leland, Leland had dictated the major affairs of the Garland family for years. That single sentence was a blatant reprimand.
Frustrated, Stanford directed his resentment toward Serena. He had explicitly warned her that his three ungrateful children would pull a stunt, and she had failed to handle it. She was completely useless.
Seeing the standoff spiraling out of her control, a flash of absolute ruthlessness crossed Serena's eyes. She raised her hand and delivered a vicious slap across Isabella's face.
Smack—!
The sharp crack shattered the silence. Isabella cradled her stinging cheek, staring at Serena with dead, vacant eyes.
