Suddenly, a dark look passed through Edmund's eyes. He pointed to a name in the newspaper. “What's this person's background?”
Rupert stepped forward to look: Adrian Markell.
After a quick mental search, Cedric selected the key information to relay. “We've looked into him. His record is very clean. Is there a problem with him, sir?”
*“Clean” was all he was. Compared to the other candidates, his profile was unimpressive.* Rupert couldn't understand what about this man had caught his master's attention.
Edmund pondered for a moment, then tapped Adrian Markell's name. “Pull up all his files. I want every single detail.”
Rupert was taken aback but quickly recovered. “Yes, sir.”
Edmund stared at the newspaper, his thoughts drifting. If he remembered correctly, this man’s approval rating had been quite low. How did he suddenly surge ahead?
The major players like them, who held the real power in Athelvia, all knew how the game was played. Capital was the key to everything. This Adrian Markell was definitely not as simple as he appeared. There had to be someone backing him.
“Grandpa…”
Just then, a girl descended the gilded spiral staircase. She had a delicate, doll-like face with wispy, slanted bangs, giving her a cute and sweet appearance.
Edmund immediately put down the newspaper. Seeing the bag in her hand, he asked with a concerned expression, “Mina, are you going out?”
Mina Blackthorne nodded. “I'm meeting Sophia Everhart to go shopping. That idiot always loves going out in this heat.”
Edmund couldn't help but smile. He knew his granddaughter was close with the Everhart girl, so he didn't think much of it. He waved his hand. “Go on. Buy whatever you want. If your allowance isn't enough, just call your grandpa.”
Edmund's eyes widened. “Are you refusing to listen to your grandpa now?”
Mina nodded, delivering the firmest words with the sweetest expression. “I won't. If you want to see her, go to our school yourself. I don't like her right now, so I'm not going to help you invite her.”
“What nonsense!” Edmund shot the girl an annoyed look. He had only become curious about Caspian’s adopted granddaughter after hearing about the conflict between the Ravenshires and the Whitmores, but he wasn’t so curious that he’d go all the way to her school.
Mina looked Edmund up and down with a grown-up expression. “Grandpa, you're the most cunning of them all. I'm not falling for it. I don't like Vivienne, but I'm not going to bring her home like some kind of commodity or pet just because you're curious. So, give it up.”
Rupert's eyelid twitched. In the entire Blackthorne family, only Miss Mina dared to speak to the old master like that, and he wouldn't even get angry.
Edmund put a hand to his forehead and waved her away helplessly, rendered speechless.
