Cyril frowned, looking genuinely confused. "Have you never once stopped to wonder why I never mentioned who my family was while you were punishing me?"
Hector's brain completely short-circuited.
It was true. If Cyril had uttered a single word about his identity during the hazing, Hector would never have dared treat him like that. But he never said a thing. Even when Hector forced him to do two thousand push-ups until he passed out cold, Cyril hadn't breathed a word.
Why?
To set him up for a spectacular fall.
Realization slammed into him. From the very beginning, Cyril never intended to let him off the hook.
Hector felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over him, the chill seeping from the soles of his feet straight into his brain.
Cyril smiled, gave a polite nod, and said, "Thank you for looking after me."
Hector swallowed hard. He grabbed Cyril's arm, all of his previous arrogance completely vanishing. "Mr. Ravenshire, it was a misunderstanding! I had no idea who you were. Please, be the bigger man and let me go. The Hargrove family will be forever grateful to you."
He had done his research. Cyril was just Dorian's illegitimate son, and the Hargrove family still had plenty of pull in Merriton. There was no way Cyril wouldn't be tempted.
Cyril saw right through him and shook his head with a look of mild regret. "It's not that I don't want to let you go. It's just that making an example out of you is the most appropriate move here. So... I'm afraid you're just going to have to suffer, sir."
Every word sounded sympathetic, yet every word cut like a knife. Hector involuntarily shuddered.
Meanwhile.
The report Cyril had submitted was already sitting in Caspian's hands.
Wearing his reading glasses, the patriarch carefully scanned every detail on the page. A moment later, a dark glint flashed in his eyes.
Who didn't know that Merriton was Dorian's territory? The Hargrove family stepping on Cyril's head was completely out of line. If they let this slide, who would ever fear Dorian again?
