Chaos Girl Rewrites the Script novel Chapter 96

Cedric nodded and headed toward the inner courtyard.

Cyril withdrew his gaze, his eyes gentle. "Grandfather, Dad mentioned you're a big fan of chess. I happened to teach myself a little at school, so I was hoping to try a game with you."

"Oh?" Caspian's interest was piqued. "You're interested in chess as well?"

Cyril replied, "I've studied all sorts of board games. I preferred Go when I was younger and even considered going professional, but Dad said my studies were more important, so I gave it up. I only learned chess this past year."

The old man frowned. "Don't listen to your father. If you truly love Go, you should pick it up again. I'll find you a master. We can talk about whether you go professional later. At your age, you can try anything. Don't be afraid, I've got your back."

Cyril's gaze faltered for a moment before he offered a faint smile. "Thank you, Grandfather. I've already put Go behind me. I don't have the urge to pick it up again."

The old man didn't press the issue, pointing to a nearby square table. "Then what are we waiting for? Set it up. Let's see how good you are."

Cyril nodded, unfolded the board, and began setting up the pieces one by one.

Caspian sat down, leaning his cane against the table. He casually picked up a piece. The wooden edges were darkened and the engravings worn smooth with use. He had initially thought the boy was just looking for an excuse to get closer to him, but it seemed he had genuinely put thought into this.

The old man pondered for a moment, then raised his hand. A housekeeper standing under the veranda immediately hurried over.

Caspian wore a kindly expression. "How about you learn to appreciate some tea with me? These young rascals these days, the moment summer hits, all they want is cold drinks. Asking them to have a hot beverage is like pulling teeth."

Cyril nodded. "Alright. I'll give it a try."

Caspian turned and instructed the housekeeper, "Go brew a pot of Imperial tea."

Caspian replied, "Starting just like that? Do you want me to give you a handicap?"

He wasn't boasting, but he'd been playing chess for forty years and was considered nearly unbeatable in amateur circles. He always crushed old Mr. Everhart from next door without mercy. But old Mr. Everhart was an outsider; with his own grandson, he had to show some restraint.

Cyril thought for a moment. "No need for a handicap. But perhaps you could let me make the first move?"

Caspian raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure? There are no family ties on the chessboard. I won't be holding back."

Cyril's eyes were gentle. "Alright."
