Fuck.

I winced the second I managed to force my bleary eyes open. Mtongue felt like sandpaper against my dry lips and instinctively I reached for the pitcher of water that was always near my bedside. Grabbing the handle, I downed it all in one go, gulping like a man that hadn’t tasted a drop of water since he was born.
By the goddess. How much had I drunk last night?
My breaths came out harshly in pants and my chest heaved. I sat up slowly and took in the warm glow of the sunlight streaming into my room.
By the corner I spied the empty bottle of 40 year old dry aged whiskey laying on its side, abandoned.
It wasn’t every day I took to alcohol the way I had the previous night. Memories flooded my mind and I recalled myself walking into my study in a daze after I left the dining hall full of guests only to grab a vase and throw it at the wall watching it shatter into a thousand tiny pieces.
The last coherent thought I had the previous night was, ‘Fuck it. Why did I ever let her go?’
The morning after wild nights of drinking was always horrendous enough to make me swear to never to it again. This time I bore my punishment with a grim silence as I moved to the bathroom for a quick shower.
I left the bathroom after what felt like hours later. My body was red from the heated water which had done wonders in relaxing my muscles, and a towel was wrapped around my middle.
While I was in the middle of dressing up an urgent knock came on the door.
“Enter,” I called out without bothering to look. When the door opened it was a maid who immediately let out a tiny squeak and turned away while I showed no sign of stopping in my motions.
“Yes?”
“Erm. Alpha, the Healer sent me to inform you that the Elder Gerome has awoken.”
I paused. That was good news. A sense of relief filled me as I hurried in pulling the shirt over my head.
Picking up my jacket and using my fingers to rake through my hair, I glamced briefly at my reflection and deemed it okay enough to step out.
With quickened strides I moved out of my bedroom suite and nearly bumped into someone. Upon glancing down at the person in question my mood suddenly shifted into a dark one.
“Felicia. What are you doing at my bedroom door this morning
Her eyes flickered to the side in a cou manner and she flipped h hair. The perfume she wore was pungent and cloying that I raised my hand to my bose briefly.
She was clad in a lace red dress. It was suited to her figure and revealed more than a little hint of cleavage
It was clear she was here to see me. Yet I held no desire for her w
“Caleb. I came to apologize for yesterday. Whatever I had said to anger you,” She took a step forward with a small pleading smile. “I am sorry. I didn’t mean it. I don’t want to ruin things between us Alpha. I want to serve you”

“Serve me,” I repeated as though she was saying the most ridiculous thing. Felicia had always been a woman who loved to please. That was why, out of all the lovers I had, I had picked her to stay the longest by my side. Her previous antics after Daria had disappeared made me furious and unwilling to touch her and care for her as much.
“Yes. I promise. And if you don’t believe me j understand.” ger eyes showed hints of pain and hurt that made me want to pity
her
If I didn’t know any better I’d have called her remorseful.
But whether she was or not, perhaps I could use this to my advantage.
I spoke immediately and cut off any other words from her in an instant.
“If you’re willing to prove you’ve changed then you will do one thing first, I folded my arms and gazed down at her. “And that will be to apologize to Daria for your actions yesterday.”
Silence. For a split second I could see a flash of defiance in her eyes but it was masked the next moment by consideration. I waited for her to react, to scream and call it unfair the way she usually did whenever I didn’t give her what she wanted.
But Felicia surprised me by flashi a relieved smile.
“Oh. Is that it? I can do that no problem. As long as you’ll forgive me Alpha Caleb. I will do whatever you want.” she replied easily.
I didn’t know what to think about her attitude. Was she really understanding what I expected of her now of all times? I knew every inch of this woman’s body enough to know that she usually didn’t apologize to anyone.
Regardless I allowed her to walk beside me as we went to Elder Gerome’s room. Upon getting close, I could already hear the murmurs coming from there.
“How do you feel now? Can you move your arms more for me please Elder?”
A pained grunt followed and I heard a hum from Daria, contemplative and soft.
I didn’t bother to knock. Striding in I noticed Daria and the Elder weren’t the only ones in there.
Sabrina stood to the side bowing to me as soon as she noticed my entrance.
“Alpha,” Sabrina greeted. Then with a pause she glanced at Felicia who stood beside me in silence. “Miss Felicia.”
Daria’s reaction wasn’t hard to miss upon hearing Sabrina’s voice. She hadn’t bothered to glance back at me but she froze briefly. Her eyes were fixed on the Elder whose eyes lit up as he saw me.
“Alpha Caleb,” Elder Gerome’s voice was as measured as it was full of weariness. Seeing that genial face weathered with age filled me with a s sense of loss that I didn’t know how to handle.
I glanced at Daria who still wasn’t looking at me. Almost like I din’t exist to her.
I held back the words I longed to say to her. Soon. Not now. But soon I’d have her back in my reach.
“How is his condition?”
She raised her head and began to speak in polite but clipped to
“He’s a little exhausted and will require some monitoring over the next couple of days. But he is otherwise fine. He will require some physical therapy to get his mobility back to how it was before”
As she spoke, she could detect an undercurrent of something el in her voice. Almost like she had something else to say to
