Chapter 13

Caleb’s POV

The sight of Daria in a rage was nothing compared to the frustration and fury that boiled in me. I was immeasurably upset; nothing was going how it should be.

“You should watch your tongue Alpha Caleb, before you say something you might regret,” She said, her voice trembling

In fact her entire body shook so much I thought she would break down in tears. But she didn’t. Instead she gazed at me with eyes so blue it enveloped me.

Her hair fell over her eyes as she lowered it and murmured, “I already regret meeting you. If I had a chance to do it all over again I would have rather died than marry you.”

My lips parted but not one word came out.

Her statement had done more than express her anger. It triggered something in me that was so primal I could barely move as she turned and began to walk away.

If I did I was afraid the walls of the mansion might not be left standing when I was done. My fingernails extended into sharp claws and I bit back several growls as I stood frozen.

“And one more thing alpha Caleb,” she stopped and turned her head but never fully faced me. “Raul is like a brother to me. I care for him more than you know. But I had never given my heart to anyone before you. Whatever accusations of infidelity you have to levy against me would fall flat if you tried. Let the past go, and we can work together. Or else……”

She didn’t finish her sentence.

But I knew what she meant.

A moment passed and I clenched my hands into tight fists, feeling the claws dig into my palms and draw blood. My palms became wet and the feeling of pain grounded me just as much as it tore me apart.

Why had I let her envelop my thoughts and ruin my mind again

“Hey man.”

Suddenly hearing Jacob behind me made me tear my gaze away from the spot that Daria had once stood. She had since disappeared down the hall and likely gone for breakfast.

“So Grandfather’s exhausted. I could hardly speak with him before he went back to sleep. But he’s doing a lot better.” Jacob stepped closer and noticed the blankets of my expression.

He turned to where I was still gazing at and then turned back to me. It didn’t take long for things to click in his head.

“Did something happen, Alpha?”

“A lot has.”

I managed to barely keep myself from growling out the words.

Thirty minutes later and we were back on my study, Jacob was seated on a chair facing me while I sat on the leather wingback chair closest to the window.

Observing one of my best friends, I noted his outward calmness and stoicism. He was usually always like that quiet and unassuming to most. But in the face of danger he never failed to impress. Being a warrior of the wisteria Pack he remained one of my best confidantes and one person I often considered to the position of Beta in the future. My Beta, Draco, was

getting on in years and we got along well. But we weren’t close.

Jacob’s eyes, however still he appeared to be, betrayed his true emotions.

“Do you believe her?”

He asked this question suddenly.

I had already finished speaking on the information that Daria had told me helpfully.

“I don’t know what to think. But it is likely.” I scowled, trying to ignore the desire to lash out that those memories brought me. “She seemed sure of herself. And Daria’s one of the best Healers this region has to offer. Her word matters a whole lot more than anyones when it comes to your grandfather’s health!

“I know. I just wish it weren’t true,” he breathed out. “Despite the fact that she hates us she still bothered to warn you.”

“She can be like that,” I replied measuredly. “…Unpredictable.”

That was one of the many opinions I held of her that never wavered. From the second Daria and I had been mates together in a ceremony I despised, she had proved that I couldn’t understand her for a lifetime. At first I hated it. But when she disappeared in the middle of the night those years ago I began to miss it.

Jacob was silent but only for a brief moment.

“You know she really holds a grudge against us. Against the pack. Do you think…” he trailed off. But I knew what he was asking.

“I don’t know if I can make her stay,” I admitted, barely able to keep the bitterness from my voice. “But I’d rather the Moon Goddess strikes me down than let her leave again.”

My words carried a weight that made him exhale heavily, shaking his head.

“Man this is fucked up. If I’d known back then I wouldn’t have supported how you treated her.”

“It’s not too late to change things,” was all I said. The topic of Dala was too heavy for me so I decided to change the subject. “Have you surveyed the plans from the Dartmouth and Green pack?”

“Yeah. They really asked for a whole lot this time. I wonder if they think we’re a free charitable organization or something.” he grunted out of mild displeasure.

I nodded. I agreed with him wholeheartedly. The Dartmouth And Green Packs were only two out of the many packs that begged for alliances with us in order to strengthen their own.

They cared nothing for the Wisteria Pack’s well-being. I doubted any of them would lift one finger to defend my pack if it ever came down to it.

“What do you plan on doing about it? They requested half of our patrol guards and supplies to tide them over until the summer ends. Those two packs I swear to the goddess,” Jacob growled despite himself.

Raising a brow at his anger I raised my hand to stop his tirade.

“I have no intention of giving them everything they want. You don’t have to worry about my stance on this Jacob. What I want is to focus on the problem. If the rogues aren’t defeated they will ask for more help. And their demands will get worse by the day.”

Pausing briefly to take a deep breath I handed the order, “Send he of our best spies to the west to investigate the whereabouts of these rogues. Their identities. Their hideouts. Every last information. I want it within two days.”

Jacob nodded, “It will be done. But what about the threats inside his Pack? My grandfather’s health…”

“Leave that to me. I will make sure Elder Gerome is safe. He’s like a grandfather to me too, Jace.”

If there was a threat from within the pack I would quash it. A threat against me and those I cared about meant a rebellion was brewing right under my very nose. It was a tug of war over power. And I wasn’t going to spare a soul who would be implicated.

Morning turned to afternoon before Jacob finally left the study with determination in his strides. But as soon as the study door shut it opened again with a faint scent of perfume signaling the arrival of Felicia.

“Caleb baby,” she looked absolutely thrilled as she walked in. She must have been waiting for Jacob and I to finish our discussion,I wagered. Normally she would always cling to my side and not leave the room unless I growled and threatened

her.

Her pleasant and calm behavior from earlier today also was a surprise. I wondered how long this would last.

Although… a part of me did enjoy it.

My eyes wandered over her body, taking in the sight of the outfit she wore that clung to her curves. I was only just a man after all. And she was a gorgeous woman.

‘Not as gorgeous as your mate, a deep voice that sounded like mine echoed in my head.

I agreed inwardly. Who could ever call that heart shaped face and lovely eyes of hers ugly? Her hair glowed like fire, and her body was just as wonderful to stare at.
