Alexander's words stabbed at Amelia's heart like a knife. She had been married to Luke Sinclair for less than two years before he died unexpectedly.
Their marriage had always been a transaction for wealth and power, devoid of real affection. She hadn't felt anything when Luke passed away, knowing she could live more freely. But then, she found out that she was pregnant.
She had thought she could just let it all go. After all, Luke was dead. However, she had to become the matriarch of the Sinclair family. Unless the family fell apart, she could never remarry.
Even so, Alexander's sudden appearance had reignited hope. She thought she could raise her child to be the next leader of the Sinclair family and finally secure her own freedom.
But Theodore stepped in, taking the position of head of the family for himself.
She regretted not being ruthless enough back then. She should've eliminated Theodore three years ago. That way, he wouldn't have become Alexander's greatest obstacle.
The call between Alexander and Amelia ended tensely. As soon as Alexander ended the call and buried himself in work, someone knocked on his office door.
Without looking up, he said, "Come in."
Isabella pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Alexander guessed it was her and didn't look up immediately, but a wave of aroma hit him. He paused and looked up to see her taking things out of an insulated bag, one by one.
"What are you… doing?"
She held up the last dish, smiling brightly at him. "I brought you lunch. I got it from your usual place. It's still hot."
He frowned, puzzled.
She said, "It's to thank you for saving my life!"
After a while, she added, "This was also specially instructed by your uncle."
Alexander's gaze darkened slightly. He stood up, walked over to the couch, and sat down, looking at the food that he liked. Isabella hadn't forgotten his favorite dishes, but she no longer liked him. All he felt was a quiet disappointment as he picked up his cutlery and started eating.
Isabella froze, staring at him blankly.
A faint smile curved his lips. "Don't worry, it's not entirely for you. It's also for me. The moment I told my mom, I felt so much lighter. I finally threw off the weight on my shoulders. I've realized that all this time, I was the only one carrying it. No one cared if it wore me down."
He lifted his gaze to hers. "But part of the reason… is you, Isabella. I don't believe you and Uncle Theo can get far together. I'll always be watching. The moment you two separate, I'll seize the opportunity!"
She stumbled back two steps, terrified. Her reaction made him laugh softly.
In the end, she bolted. She couldn't understand it. After his hospitalization, he seemed like a completely different person. Did he… hit his head or something?
She almost ran into the door frame as she fled and fumbled to steady herself against the wall. Back at her desk, her fingers still tingled from his touch—the rough bandages, the warmth of his palm, and the careful force hidden in his grip.
Messages from Vivian flashed across her screen, but she stared blankly, replaying his words over and over in her mind. "The moment you two separate, I'll seize the opportunity."
