By the time Isabella had washed up and was ready for bed, Theodore had not yet returned to their room. This was typical of him at normal times. But it was obvious that she was mad today…
In the past, Theodore would immediately notice whenever Isabella was angry. As expected, he became an entirely different person whenever it had something to do with Queenie.
Still seething with unresolved fury, Isabella kicked her feet against the mattress a number of times. Suddenly, with one forceful kick, she sat right up. Then, she hopped out of bed and marched to the door.
Nevertheless, all her rage dissipated the moment she pulled the door open and peeked out.
There was no one around.
Only then did she step out the door to head to the study to have a look.
In order to get to the study, she had to go past the stairwell. The attic was just up the stairs. Since the day she moved in, she knew that the attic was forbidden ground. Other than Theodore himself, no one else was allowed to enter.
She had never been curious about what was in there prior to this. After all, everyone had secrets of their own.
But today, when her gaze swept across that door, her heart skipped a beat out of nowhere. Instinctively, she halted in her tracks.
For some reason, an idea popped into her mind. Queenie wouldn't actually be hiding in there, would she?
Even though Isabella knew that this was completely impossible, the moment she had that thought, she couldn't help but have the urge to open that door. It felt as if an invisible hand was tugging at her, leading her up the stairs. Step by step, she advanced on the carpeted floor without making a sound.
She came to a stop when she turned the corner at the stairs. Subconsciously, she tightened her grasp on the hem of her shirt.
Logically speaking, she should turn around and leave. If she really wanted to know about the attic, she could go to Theodore, who was in the study, and ask him for a clear answer. She didn't have to sneak into the forbidden area like this.
Nonetheless, it felt like her feet were stuck to the floor. She couldn't move away no matter how she tried.
She took a deep breath as her pupils shifted. She slowly raised her hand, and just as her fingers were about to come in contact with the cold, wooden door, the sound of a ringing phone blared.
Isabella froze as she held her breath. Later, she realized that the ringtone was coming from the study. Someone was calling Theodore.
She took another glance at the door and gave up in the end. Then, she turned back.
Isabella blinked innocently at him. Miserably, she asked, "Am I?"
He took out his phone, searched for her number, and gave her a call even though they were facing each other.
After his call went through, he said, "Someone from the Sinclair residence called, saying that Alexander wants to break off his engagement with the Logan family. Amelia gave him a good beating and locked him up. I need to head back to settle this."
Alexander wanted to call off his engagement?
Isabella shrank her shoulders diffidently when she heard that. Although this had nothing to do with her, Alexander had previously mentioned to her about wanting to call off his engagement to Natalie because of her.
She gave in. "Go ahead, then."
She worried that she'd be dragged into the already-messy situation, so she decided not to butt in.
This time, Theodore bent forward and gave her a peck on her lips. In a tender voice, he comforted her, "Just call me if you can't fall asleep. I'll put you to bed."
