Cheated Once Cherished Forever: The Billionaire's Bride novel Chapter 149

"I'm not!" Isabella denied.

Only after the words left her mouth did she realize she sounded overly defensive. She glanced up and, sure enough, met Alexander's scrutinizing gaze.

She fell silent. Neither of them spoke again, and the elevator was filled with awkward silence.

Isabella pulled out her phone, pretending to check her messages. However, she could feel Alexander's eyes on her. She was genuinely baffled by how someone could just stand in a tense elevator without even glancing at their phone.

Finally, the ding of the elevator broke the silence, and the doors slid open. Isabella stepped aside to let Alexander exit first, but he didn't move.

With no other choice, she stepped out herself, only to collide with him as he suddenly moved forward at the same moment. She lost her balance and instinctively reached out to hold on to something, but her fingers brushed against his warm arm first.

She yanked her hand back as if she had gotten burned and stumbled half a step backward.

"Are you daydreaming this early in the morning?" Alexander's voice came from above, laced with a faint huskiness.

He steadied her with a quick hand, and the soft touch of her sleeve lingered on his fingertips, subtly easing his frown.

Isabella kept her head down and tightened her grip on her phone. "T-Thanks, Mr. Sinclair."

"Are you sick?" he asked.

"No, no!" she quickly denied.

He scanned her, only heading to his office when he didn't see any obvious signs of illness. He'd only taken a few steps when Isabella spoke to him from behind.

"Um… about Jessie… What are you planning to do with her?"

Alexander turned, a faint smirk on his lips. "I'm going to hand her over to the police."

He lowered his voice. "Being soft on your enemies is being cruel to yourself. That's something you should learn from Uncle Theo."

Isabella was left speechless.

The coldness in his eyes subsided slightly at her reaction, and his tone softened. "Don't worry about this. I'll handle it appropriately."

She nodded. "Got it, Mr. Sinclair. I'll head to my desk now."

She turned and walked off, her steps noticeably quicker. It was as if she were afraid he'd read any more of her thoughts.

Alexander watched her hurry off as he absent-mindedly fired off a message. "Go easy on Jessie. Don't let her die, but make sure she's not comfortable either."

Then, he headed into his office. However, his mind lingered on the moment in the elevator when Isabella's fingertips had grazed his arm. They were soft and warm, and they'd felt like feathers brushing against his skin, leaving a faint, lingering itch.
