Isabella could barely stand. Huge beads of sweat rolled down her forehead, and she had to grip the table tightly just to keep herself upright.
Richard snatched her phone from her hand, turned it off, and shoved it into his pants pocket.
Margaret, who had been lying on the bed, sat up. Her movements were spry and agile, showing no sign of the dying woman she pretended to be just moments ago. When she spoke, her voice was full of vigor.
She questioned viciously, "Why hasn't she dropped yet? I told you to prepare a higher dose, but you wouldn't listen! Look at this. If anything goes wrong, we're both done for! Quick! Just knock her out cold!"
Isabella felt like lead weights were hanging from her eyelids. She dug her fingernails hard into her palms, trying to use the pain to stay lucid.
However, Richard was already looking for a tool to strike her with. Isabella told herself she could not pass out. She absolutely could not pass out here!
Summoning the last of her strength, she bolted toward her old bedroom.
Margaret grabbed her tightly. "Trying to run? Isabella! We raised you for so many years. Since you won't give us money, we have no choice but to sell you off! Isn't that man of yours rich? We'll just make him pay a ransom to get you back!"
A loud buzzing filled Isabella's ears. She could not hear a word Margaret was saying.
There was only one thought in her mind—"Run!"
Theodore was still downstairs, waiting for her!
At the thought of Theodore, Isabella lifted her foot and kicked Margaret with everything she had. In reality, she had very little strength left, but Margaret, afraid of being hit, instinctively dodged.
That dodge gave Isabella a sliver of a chance. She rushed into her room just as Richard found a wooden club in the kitchen.
Isabella's hands trembled as she locked the door. She knew this flimsy door would not hold for long, so she did not dare waste a second. She stumbled toward the window.
However, she collapsed onto the floor with a thud. Her vision blurred even more, and all the strength seemed to be drained from her body. She clawed blindly at the floorboards, trying to ground herself in reality.
But the slight sting of splinters was nothing compared to the overwhelming weakness surging through her limbs.
