"Get out," Theodore spat out the words in a flat tone.
Alexander merely smiled.
Isabella also said to him, "Alexander, please leave. I have something to say to him."
Since even Isabella had spoken, Alexander finally stopped resisting. He obediently retreated, but before he left, he left a message for Isabella. "You can call me anytime."
This was a blatant provocation directed at Theodore.
Only Isabella and Theodore remained in the ward. Theodore walked slowly to Isabella's bedside. He raised his hand slightly, wanting to hold hers, but Isabella abruptly avoided his touch.
Theodore's hand froze in mid-air. He lowered his eyes to look at Isabella, a look of disbelief in his gaze.
Her eyes were still red-rimmed. She stared straight at him, looking as fragile as glass, as if she might shatter at any moment. She did not know how much her gaze at this moment pained Theodore's heart.
"Bella—"
"I ask, you answer," Isabella interrupted him.
Her gaze and her questioning tone felt like slow torture to Theodore. He could only nod silently.
Isabella sniffled and looked up at him. "Did you swap Jessie's letter?"
Theodore frowned. Regarding this matter, he trusted Caleb's capabilities. Unless someone deliberately investigated it, it was impossible to discover that the letter was a fake.
"Answer me." Actually, during the few seconds of Theodore's silence, Isabella already had the answer.
"Yes," he replied.
Hearing his answer, Isabella's head, which she had just propped up, plopped weakly onto the pillow. Her eyes became helpless, and she looked like a puppy that had suddenly been abandoned on the street by its owner.
Tears slid from the corners of her eyes, instantly piercing Theodore's heart.
He wanted to reach out and wipe them away, but at this moment, Theodore suddenly realized that Isabella felt far, far away from him.
He heard her ask again, her voice light and faint, "Did you drive Jessie to suicide as well?"
Being with a man who doted on her and loved her like this, should she be grateful?
Isabella felt cold all over. With a man as formidable as Theodore, how many other things were there that she did not know about? Up to now, she felt as if she did not understand Theodore at all.
She greatly lacked a sense of security. Therefore, she was afraid of such a dangerous man as Theodore. She was afraid to get close, and even more afraid that she would fall too deep.
"Theodore, can I ask you a question?" Isabella asked.
She tightly gripped the bedsheet beneath her. Theodore saw it, and his heart tightened along with her grip. He knew this question would not be easy to answer.
Isabella asked, "Why did you marry me back then?"
His lips moved slightly, but he dared not admit that it was because of love. He was not an indecisive man, nor was he cowardly. However, right now, when Isabella was questioning his every action, if he said he loved her, Isabella would not believe him. She would only suspect him more.
"Bella, I happened to need to marry, and you happened to appear. So, I chose you."
Isabella asked, "But you clearly had better choices. Why me? Because of my relationship with Alexander?"
