"I still think something elegant, demure, and well-behaved would be more to his taste."
Deep down, she was a stickler for the rules, raised to be poised and steady. She couldn't just let loose and act provocative.
...
"Mr. Lowery, I've got the room keys. Let's head inside."
Harrison walked out and saw his boss frozen at the entrance, staring intensely into the distance, prompting him to speak up.
"Harrison, I just saw Vanessa."
"Are you... sure you didn't mistake someone else for her?"
"I could never mistake her."
They had been together for three years; no one knew her better than he did.
Even if Vanessa turned to ash, he would recognize her at a glance.
Harrison mentally rolled his eyes.
What a cheating scumbag. Even if you didn't misidentify her, have some self-awareness and stay away instead of making yourself a nuisance.
Out of the corner of his eye, Harrison spotted someone.
"Chloe, what are you doing here?"
Chloe Quinn jogged up to Lucas, her eyes slightly red.
"Luke, I missed you. Please let me stay by your side. I promise I won't cause any trouble."
She gently rested her hand on her lower stomach, her voice soft. "The baby misses its dad, too."
She grabbed Lucas's hand and pressed it against her abdomen.
Lucas yanked his hand back violently, his eyes turning cold and dark.
"Chloe, are you stalking me?"
"Luke, I was just so worried about you. I know you came to Sterling City to find Vanessa. When you find her, I'm willing to help you explain everything to her. I'll beg for her forgiveness on my knees... As soon as I give birth, I'll vanish and never disrupt your perfect little family of three."
Family of three.
Those words violently pierced Lucas's defenses.
Growing up as an orphan, he craved a complete, warm family more than anyone else in the world.
