Stepping out of the hotel, Lucas answered a call from Chloe.
"Luke, something awful happened. I heard Vanessa is trying to sell her Vortex shares."
"What the hell are you talking about?" Lucas's voice instantly plummeted.
"It's true! I've already reached out to the buyers and told them you two just had a little lovers' quarrel and the share sale is totally fake... But if she's dead set on offloading them, someone is bound to buy."
The company had just gone public and was the hottest topic in Savannah. Countless vultures were circling, waiting for a piece of Vortex.
Lucas spun on his heel, charging back into the hotel to demand answers.
"Vanessa, what right do you have to sell those shares!"
"Get out here! We need to talk!"
Having just caught her breath, Vanessa listened to the frantic pounding on her door and the man's unhinged, furious screaming. She obviously wasn't stupid enough to let him back in.
The second she discovered he had cheated, lied, and betrayed her, they were entirely dead and buried.
There was absolutely nothing left to discuss.
She dialed the hotel's front desk.
"Hi, I need security sent up to my room immediately to remove someone harassing me at my door. If you don't, I'm going to seriously question this hotel's safety standards."
Moments later, she heard Lucas arguing with security before being forcibly dragged away.
Her phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number.
The second she answered, Lucas's venomous, rage-filled voice exploded through the speaker.
"Vanessa, without my approval, absolutely nobody in this city will dare touch those shares."
Years of uninterrupted success had made him insanely arrogant and hopelessly conceited.
Hearing his delusional confidence, Vanessa let out a mocking laugh.
"Lucas, I really hope you can keep up that confidence."
She couldn't be bothered to waste another breath on him. She hung up and blocked the number without a second thought.
Vanessa logged into her banking app, changed every single password, and dialed a number.
