Alistair spoke with lazy indifference. "How did you even know I was there?"
"The old man told me. But why exactly did you refuse to show your face tonight?"
The second he arrived, he had gotten a text from Alistair explicitly telling him to keep his real identity under wraps.
As a result, everyone in the room mistook him for Ace Howard.
He was the one who handpicked the bride, yet the woman couldn't even recognize her own fiancé.
It was honestly highly entertaining.
"When did you turn into such a tragic, secret romantic?"
Alistair lounged back in the leather chair, lazily tapping his fingers against the armrest. "It's a long story."
...
The warm water rushed over her shoulders, the dense steam wrapping her in a hazy, comforting cocoon.
She kept her eyes closed, desperately trying to use the hot bath to clear her head, but her mind viciously betrayed her, looping the memory of Alistair kissing her in the car over and over again.
It felt as if a pair of invisible, rough hands were trailing beneath the water, ghosting agonizingly over her bare skin.
Her fingers unconsciously brushed the side of her own neck, tracing the exact spot still burning from the heat of his breath.
Traveling down her collarbone to the swell of her chest, a sudden shiver wrecked through her. Her breath hitched, her fingers going utterly weak.
The bathwater rippled softly, reflecting the wet, devastatingly flushed state of her own eyes.
She silently cursed herself for being so pathetic. She couldn't stop obsessing over that man. It was like he had entirely possessed her!
After stepping out of the shower, she headed downstairs to grab a glass of water.
As she made her way back up, she caught the muffled sounds of George and Elaine screaming at each other in the master bedroom. The second the door ripped open, she quickly flattened herself into the shadows of the hallway.
"George Grant, I regret the day I ever married you! If you can't get over her, then spend the rest of your pathetic life mourning a ghost!"
"You are absolutely out of your mind."
Clutching a pillow and blanket, George stormed down the hall and shoved his way into the study without looking back.
Vanessa lowered her eyelashes, masking the cold indifference in her eyes.
...
The next morning, Vanessa went to Vittini to finalize the handover process.
