Margaret’s tone softened in an instant. “Your brother was just joking with you. Why are

you taking it so seriously? I’ll talk to him later.”

“No need,” Charlotte said.

She cut a cold glance at Robert. “Don’t put your hands on me again. Next time, I’ll cripple

your hand.”

Robert didn’t take it to heart at all. He wasn’t even angry. That roguish grin stayed on his

face.

“Charlotte, it’s been years. You’re getting more and more to my taste.”

The way he said it was downright suggestive.

But Margaret only assumed her son treated this adopted daughter like a real sister. She

didn’t think much of it.

Charlotte knew exactly what he meant. She shot Robert a warning look, then went back

to her room.

Luckily, the house had maids cleaning every day. The room was spotless.

Charlotte opened the closet, pulled out a small suitcase, and packed a few changes of

clothes.

She’d been wronged in the Russell family, but she’d never planned to come back here

and cry about it-much less stay here.

Besides, she had Moon Garden now.

At least she finally had somewhere to land.

When Charlotte walked out with the suitcase, Margaret spotted her.

She looked confused. “Why are you dragging a suitcase around?”

Charlotte didn’t want to explain. “I’m going out for a couple days.”

Margaret frowned. “If you’re going out, why aren’t you getting your things from your own

home? Why come here for luggage?”

Her own home?

Charlotte felt a little sad.

Other than the Moon Garden she’d clawed out of Matthew’s hands, where did she have

a home of her own?

She’d already prepared what to say.

“I was passing by. What’s the difference where I grab it?”

Margaret caught the oddness immediately. “You’re leaving tonight?”

Charlotte said, “Yeah.”

Margaret asked, “You’re not going back to let them know?”

“I already did.”

Margaret’s expression turned heavy, like she was giving heartfelt advice.

“Charlie, you’ve been married into the Russell family for three years. Don’t just focus on

eating, drinking, and having fun. You need to hurry up and have a baby with your

husband. With a child, you’ll have more security.”

“Otherwise, if one day your husband has a child with another woman, what will you do

then?”

Charlotte laughed coldly inside.

What did she mean, ‘if’?

Hadn’t it already happened?

The only difference was, it wasn’t with some woman outside.

It was one from their own house.

Charlotte didn’t want to talk. “I’m leaving.”

But Margaret stopped her.

“I still have something to say.”

Charlotte could only force herself to listen.

“Charlie, you know this too. Even if we got through the financial crisis, the Smith Group

can’t go back to what it used to be.”

“But the Russell family is different. They’re at their peak now. They’ve completely replaced our Smith family’s position in Sunriver.”

“And Matthew didn’t bring up divorce because of that. He even lent us money. That means he still cares about you.”

“So you have to hurry up and give him a child. Hold on to him tight. Cling to that lifeline. Don’t let go.”

“Do you understand?”

Charlotte pressed her lips together and stayed silent.

Margaret sighed. “The Smith family can’t give you anything anymore. From now on, you’ll

still have to rely on the Russell family to live. Be smarter about everything.”

“And change that habit of yours-only knowing how to eat, drink, and play. If you’ve got

time, go flatter your husband more. Flatter Old Madam and your mother-in-law, too.”

Charlotte let out a light breath. “Are you done?”

Margaret saw her impatience. “Don’t act like you don’t want to hear it. Everything I’m

saying is for your own good.”

Charlotte said, “Or are you reminding me that everything in the Smith family has nothing

to do with me, so I shouldn’t even think about it?”

Margaret froze.

This adopted daughter wasn’t that stupid after all.

Charlotte closed her eyes for a moment, feeling sorrowed.

She wished-so badly-that her mother could hug her right now. That she could give

her even a little comfort.

But those were unreachable luxuries.

“I’m in a hurry. Gotta go.”

After that, she walked away without looking back.

Robert appeared from behind out of nowhere, startling Margaret so hard she jumped.

“You little brat, you scared me to death.”

Robert draped an arm over her shoulder. “Mom, don’t you think my sister is getting

prettier and prettier? More and more attractive.”

Margaret didn’t think too deeply. “That’s true. Looks like these years in the Russell family

haven’t been too bad for her.”

Robert smiled with a meaning that didn’t belong in a brother’s mouth. “I don’t think it

has anything to do with the Russell family. My sister just had good genes to begin with.

Her biological parents were definitely not ordinary people.”

The moment she heard that, Margaret’s face darkened.

“Robert, why are you bringing that up for no reason? Are you bored out of your mind?”

Robert said, “I was just saying it. Why are you getting mad?”

Margaret responded firmly, “You can’t say that again.”

“Fine. If you won’t let me say it, I won’t.” Robert’s smile turned ingratiating. “But, Mom…

these years overseas, I dated a few girlfriends. None of them were anything special.

Compared to my sister, it’s heaven and hell. Why don’t you let her divorce that Russell

guy and marry me instead?”
