The last thing I remembered before I fell asleep, was Valiant pulling me closer after I finished the bowl of popcorn. I didn’t wake up during the night or suffer from another nightmare. Surprisingly, it was the best damn sleep I’ve had since I arrived at their place.
It shocked me when I started to wake up and realized that I was sandwiched between two hard bodies. There was an arm resting across my hips and something long and hard pressed against my ass.
I had read enough books to know that it was someone’s morning wood. But whose?
Frowning, I opened my eyes and blinked at the face resting on the pillow only a few inches from mine.
My eyes darted over his face and then lowered to linger on his parted lips. He was so close that I could feel his warm breath fanning my skin.
“You snore.”
I blinked at him.
His lips curled up into a smile and a moment later his eyes fluttered open. “Good morning.”
“Are you feeling better?” I asked him.
“Yes, thank you. Alex told me that you took good care of me.‘
I frowned. All I had done was check up on him and make him something to eat. I never stepped foot inside his room because the darkness scared me.
“I didn’t…” I trailed off and decided that it was best not to tell him about it.
“I’m glad you’re feeling better,” I said instead. “When did you get into bed with us?”
“About an hour ago,” Elias said softly. “Why, uncomfortable?”
I took a moment to answer his question.
The bed was big enough for four people, but we were all pressed together in the middle. Their heat surrounded me, making me feel cozy, and warm and safe enough to go back to sleep.
“No, I’m not uncomfortable.” I sucked in a breath and slowly blew it out. “I like it.”
Their scents were combined with mine and…I liked it. But there was one thing missing.
As if he knew I was thinking about him, Alexander stormed into the room. He didn’t even seem a bit surprised to find us all in bed together.
Storming over to Valiant’s side, he gripped his arm and gave it a jerk.
“Hey!” I sat up and glared at him. “Don’t do that! He worked late last night.”
“We all work late, Daisy–girl.”
He did it again, making Valiant groan.

Leaning over him Valiant, I gripped Alexander’s wrist and pushed it away. “I said stop it!”
“Or what?” Alexander taunted.
“I’ll kick you in the balls!”
He blinked at me.
Behind me, Elias chuckled.
“Let him sleep.”
“It’s already ten in the morning,” Alexander growled. “We have shit to take care of.”
Alexander stormed over to the floating shelves and grabbed the TV remote. He surfed through the channels until he found a news channel and then turned back to the bed as he pointed a finger at the screen.
“How did they get that?” I questioned.
I stared at the photo on the screen with wide eyes. It was a picture of a younger me, taken right after my mother married John. The picture changed to another one.
“Turn up the volume,” Elias ordered.
“No.”
“Alex-”
“You already know what they’re talking about.”
“What are they talking about?”
None of them needed to answer me because the picture disappeared and was replaced with a video of the building I had been held hostage at when I was seven. People were gathered around it behind the police tape, pointing and talking among themselves. The camera zoomed in on some of the policemen, Elias specifically. A man behind him yelled something and pointed a finger, making the camera jerk in that direction.
I already knew what was going to happen next.
“Turn it off,” Elias and I said at the same time.
My heart was beating a mile a minute, making me feel sick. I couldn’t look away from the TV.
Alexander turned back to the TV and pressed a button, but instead of turning it off, he turned on the volume.
People were yelling and pointing at the building.
The doors burst open, and there I was, running towards freedom. Elias appeared on camera, running towards me with his arms wide
open.
“Turn it off, Alex!”
I was suddenly back there again. Running away from the men who had grabbed me and forced me into the back of their car with a bag over my head. I could feel the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair after days of being

Detective Walker yelled something at me, but his words were blocked out by a sudden explosion.
My body was slammed forward by the force of it. I felt the heat first, followed by excruciating pain.
“I’m sorry, I’m so fucking sorry, baby girl. I turned it off.”
I opened my eyes and stared at the blurry face a few inches from mine for a moment before I looked at the TV.
“I’m sorry.”
My eyes snapped back to Alexander and then over to Elias who was standing at Valiant’s desk. Bend over slightly, he was gripping the edges of the table so tightly that his knuckles were white.
His breathing matched mine.
I flinched away from Alexander’s touch.
Sliding out of bed, I made my way towards Elias on shaky legs. I stopped behind him, but when he didn’t acknowledge me, I slipped between him and the desk.
Elias swallowed loudly and slowly raised his head to look at me. Reaching up, I wiped a bead of sweat away with shaky fingers.
No words were needed.
I wrapped my arms around his middle and hugged him tightly.
He didn’t hug me back, but he pressed his cheek to the top of my head. I wanted him to wrap his arms around me and offer me the same comfort I was offering him.
“How many stations are running the story?” Valiant questioned, suddenly wide awake.
“Two minor news channels.”
“That can change at any moment. I’ll make some calls.”
Silence settled around the room. I thought that they had left us alone. My body jerked when a hand touched my shoulder. I tightened my arms around Elias.
“I’m sorry,” Alexander apologized again.
“Get out.”
“Elias-”
“Get. Out. Alex,” Elias growled.
His hand slipped away. Letting out a sigh, he walked away.
The moment the door closed behind him, the tension drained from Elias’s body. I raised my head to look at him, but he pressed his face to the crook of my neck, making goosebumps break out over my skin.
He wrapped his arms around my waist and hugged me tightly.

While my breathing had calmed, Elias was still struggling to catch his breath.
“What do you want me to do?” I asked.
His lips brushed my skin as he spoke. “Just let me hold you.”
Elias held me for what felt like hours, but in reality was only a few minutes before he pulled away. Cupping my cheeks, his eyes darted over my face.
“Are you okay?” he breathed.
I nodded. “Are you?”
He pressed his forehead against mine.
Reaching back, he gripped my wrist and guided my hand to his chest where he pressed it against his racing heart.
“My heart is beating so fast, I actually feel sick,” he whispered.
“Do you feel like you can’t suck enough air into your lungs? Your heart is beating so fast, and your stomach is twisting in on itself, making you feel like you want to puke.” I fell silent, realizing that I had said too much.
“Was that what it felt like at the cafe?” he questioned.
“Is that how you’re feeling now?”
Elias frowned. “No, I don’t think I’m going to have a panic attack.”
“Good.”
He sucked in a breath and slowly blew it out as his eyes fluttered closed.
“I remembered that day clearly,” he whispered. “I remember going over the plans of the building, searching for
a way in. I remember the people lingering about and the other policemen struggling to keep them away from the building. I remember the conversation I just had with the kidnapper on the phone.” He shivered. “And I remember you running out of that building straight towards me. The look on your face…and then everything went black.”
I stayed silent, waiting for him to continue. His eyes slowly fluttered open and locked with mine again.
“You said that you were at the hospital?”
I nodded.
“Were you there to see me, or were you injured from the explosion?”
It was my turn to close my eyes. I knew that if I tried to walk away, he would stop me. Elias wanted an answer and he wasn’t going to let me walk out of the room without answering him.
“Both,” I whispered.
His hands slipped to my hips, fingers digging into my skin slightly. “How bad?”

“Some burns and an injury from some debris of the building,” I told him. “I didn’t get as badly hurt as you.”
“You shouldn’t have gone through that,” he growled. “You were only fucking seven. He should have protected you. He should have just given them the fucking money they wanted.”
“It doesn’t matter,” I whispered.
His lips parted, but he changed his mind at the last second and remained silent instead. Shaking his head slightly, I stepped away.
“Things are about to get much worse, flower,” he muttered. “It always does when the press gets a whiff of something new in Alex’s life.”
