“Mr. Sanchez? What on earth are you doing here?” A sharp twinge of guilt stabbed at my heart. I completely blew him off. He mentioned coming tonight, but I got swamped by the Thorn Pack mess.

On impulse, I checked my phone. There were Leonardo’s unread texts from hours ago, asking if I was up for dinner.

“I headed to the Moon-Shadowed Pack to look for you. They said you’d split ages back,” Leonardo said, looking up as he heard my voice. His voice was rough and low, full of the night’s chill. “I got antsy when

didn’t answer, so I came over.”

He didn’t give me grief or show a hint of annoyance, just laid it out calm-like. But under that calm, I could sense a bit of let-down?

“How long’ve you been waiting? Why didn’t you give me a ring?” I rushed over. The chill around Leonardo made me feel ten times worse.

Leonardo was quiet for a sec, then mumbled, “I tried once, but you were on the line.” He paused, his voice getting real soft, like he was talking to himself, explaining an old habit, “After waiting for my family’s calls so many times as a kid, I just don’t dig calling much. Especially when I get the busy signal or no answer.”

Those words hit me like a ton of bricks. Behind his easy-going tone were years of being alone and hopes that never panned out.

I looked at Leonardo’s pale face in the hallway light, at the worry and tiredness he was trying to hide. All the cold-shoulder treatment, the scheming, and the crap I’d taken from the Richardson family during the day suddenly found a safe place.

He was nothing like those Richardson folks.

My heart clenched, a mix of guilt and this new feeling of wanting to be close. As an orphan, a half-breed who was looked down on, I should’ve kept my distance from Leonardo, an Alpha at the top of the werewolf world. But my body moved before my brain.

“Sorry.” I stepped up and gave Leonardo a gentle hug. It had dropped a few degrees outside, and his coat was cold as ice. “I got wrapped up in some things today and spaced out,” I whispered.

My hug seemed to loosen up Leonardo a bit. His cedar-scented pheromones fluttered a little. But he slowly pushed me away.

“It’s late. Go in and get some shut-eye,” he said.

“Mr. Sanchez, are you ticked at me?” I was caught off guard and grabbed his sleeve as he turned. My werewolf instincts told me there was more going on than he let on.

“No,” Leonardo said quickly, but the little break in his voice gave him away.

“Is it because I forgot you’d come or because I didn’t reply to your texts?” My voice got all soft, almost like I

was playing cute, and I didn’t even realize it. It was like being around him melted the cold part of me.

Leonardo didn’t say a word.

Leonardo’s POV:

I had always kept a certain distance in my interpersonal relationships, so I had long been used to goodbyes, indifference, and being forgotten. However, while I was waiting for Natalie tonight, a sense of unease suddenly washed over me. I didn’t have the guts to call her, fearing she’d leave me hanging.

These unfamiliar emotions that stirred up my mind were like a lingering nightmare.

Natalie’s POV:

“Leonardo, please don’t be mad at me, alright?” I sidled up to him and wrapped my arms around his slender waist from behind. My voice was husky, laced with apology and a touch of cajolery.

“I promise I’ll respond to your texts right away next time and won’t forget a single word you say.” I took a moment, breathing in his reassuring aroma. “Truth is, I had a rough time today. Could you stick around and keep me company for a bit?”
