“Mr. Sanchez, your possessiveness is terrifying,” teased gently, meeting his intense gaze. “Are you afraid I’ll run away? Or that you can’t protect me?”
Leonardo chuckled. His thumb brushed past the corner of my mouth, rubbing it firmly. “Whether I can protect you or not, you’re welcome to test it. Let’s see if I can’t clear everything around you and make sure you don’t get hurt.”
They were clearly flirtatious words. But for some reason, looking into his eyes, I felt a slight chill. It was as if he wasn’t entirely joking, but actually possessed a near-obsessive need for control, hidden deep in his heart.
That night, I was woken from sleep by a persistent vibrating sound. It was Leonardo’s phone. I nudged him, and his arm was still wrapped tightly around my waist. It took him a moment to lift his hand and fumble for the phone on the nightstand, silencing it.
“Is it urgent? Maybe you should answer it?” I asked, still half-asleep.
Leonardo had already pulled me closer again. “Sleep,” he said, his voice rough.
When I woke the next morning, Leonardo was already gone. My phone also had multiple messages and a missed call. Lily texted me to check the work group chat. Everyone was discussing how the Thompson family project had been suspended, and the partnership might fall through.
I was confused when a business news alert popped up, “The Thompson heiress survived a suicide attempt last night and is now out of danger after emergency treatment.”
The article included background on the Thompson family and Victoria. Victoria, once prominent for her looks and figure, had briefly entered the entertainment industry. She had shot commercials and dipped into the public eye before fading from view. Now, news of her suicide attempt, coupled with the exposure of her heiress status, sparked widespread discussion.
Many comments mourned her former charm, and rumors ran wild. They said she retreated from the spotlight for love, and after all these years, she was still let down.
My heart sank heavily. When we left last night, Victoria was with her family. How could this happen?
I vaguely remembered Leonardo’s phone vibrating constantly in the middle of the night.
Could it be Victoria?

I sat on the living room sofa. The morning light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, but it couldn’t dispel the gloom in my heart.
Aaron’s report echoed in my ears. The scum wh attacked Natalie had been dealt with thoroughly. But it wasn’t enough. Any threat to er safety needed to be eliminated at the root. I murmured, “Penelope, Samuel, you’d better pray I don’t find solid evidence.”
Natalie hurried out of the bedroom, her face worried. “Leonardo, something happened to Victoria,” she said.
I looked up, seeing the concern in her eyes. I knew she’d find out eventually. “I know.” I nodded. The phone in my hand still seemed to carry the irritation from its constant vibrating last night. Victoria always knew how to stir up drama in the most extreme ways, trying to get attention or make me feel guilty.
“Do you want to go see her?” she asked, walking over to me with a cautious tone.
We both understood what Victoria was trying to achieve with this. I shook my head and said, “I’ve already confirmed she’s fine.” Showing up a her side now would only give her false hope and create unnecessary trouble for Natalie.
“If it’s because of me, you don’t need to worry. You grew up owing the Thompson family and Victoria. I won’t hold that against you.” Natalie looked at me, her gaze clear and accepting. She could see I wasn’t completely unmoved. It was natural. When someone was willing to throw their life away for you, no matter how twisted the feelings, it created a heavy burden.
But she didn’t need to worry about this. I said, “We can’t control what Victoria does. And her actions won’t make me waver in the slightest.”
I looked down. A rare question slipped out, carrying a hint of uncertainty I hadn’t even been aware of. “Do you… Do you also think I’m heartless?”
I regretted it as soon as I said it. Since when did care about others’ judgments?
“Leonardo.” Her voice was gentle, yet held a soothing power. She sat beside me. Just as I had supported her countless times, she cupped my face, making me look into her eyes. They held no judgment, only understanding and gentleness. “The way you handle things might seem decisive to others, but it’s not heartless. It’s knowing your boundaries. And you know this is actually the best thing for Victoria.
“As long as you believe you’re doing the right thing, you don’t need to care about anyone else’s opinion.”
