Chapter 144 The Ride Home
Quinn blinked in surprise. “He told you?”
A small wave of guilt crept up her chest.
“What exactly did he say?”
Lucy answered casually, “He said he doesn’t like the idea of me living alone, so he asked if you’d move back and stay with me again.“,
Quinn quietly let out the breath she had been holding.
Lucy grinned. “I was really happy when he said you agreed,” she said. “But listen, he didn’t pressure you or anything, right? When Julian gets that serious look on his face, it’s honestly intimidating. Quinn, don’t force yourself if you don’t want to.”
What could Quinn possibly say?
She could hardly admit that she had touched Julian’s abs and agreed because of that ridiculous deal.
So she shook her head quickly.
“No, not at all,” she said. “I actually feel the same way. I don’t like the idea of you living alone either.”
Now that the subject was out in the open, Quinn felt much lighter.
Luckily Julian had already explained things to Lucy.
Otherwise Quinn would have had no idea how to bring it up herself. Moving out, only to move back again.
Thinking about it now, Julian handled things surprisingly carefully. When Quinn stepped into the private room, the first person she saw was Julian. Their eyes met.
She immediately looked away and sat beside
Lucy.
The moment she sat down, her phone buzzed.
Quinn glanced at the screen. The message was from Julian, who was sitting across the table.
Julian sent a message, “You promised you wouldn’t avoid me.”
Quinn replied, “I’m not avoiding you.”
Julian replied, “Then why won’t you look at me?”
Quinn tilted her phone so Lucy could not see the screen.
Quinn replied, “I can’t just stare at you the whole time. That would be rude.”
Julian replied, “You can stare. Nobody will mind.”

Heat spread across Quinn’s cheeks.
What is he even saying?
Who just stares at someone for no reason?
She locked her phone and placed it beside her plate.

No matter how many times it buzzed afterward, she refused to check it again. At least there were five people at dinner tonight.
She could stay quiet and blend into the background. Unfortunately Lucy suddenly brought up the moving plan.
“After dinner I’m going with Quinn to grab her things,” Lucy said cheerfully. “She’s moving back in with
me.”
Julian spoke calmly, “You go home first and clean her room. I’ll pick up her things.”
Quinn instinctively wanted to refuse.
Julian looked up at her. Her heart trembled slightly. The words stuck in her throat.
She had promised him she would stop avoiding him.
She could not break that promise.
Once she moved again, there probably would not be any reason for them to see each other anymore.
Just get through this one last time.
It was only moving. And she did not have many belongings anyway.
It would not take long.
After dinner the five of them separated outside the restaurant.
Zeke drove Jess home. Lucy went back to the apartment first.
She did not actually know what needed cleaning, but since Julian had asked, she decided to do it anyway,
Quinn got into Julian’s car. Tonight there was a driver, so both of them sat in the back seat.
When other people were around, Quinn could manage.
But being alone with Julian made her feel uncomfortable from head to toe. She had never done anything as embarrassing as what happened between them.
The incident on the yacht had already been humiliating enough.
She never imagined that after getting drunk again, she would end up in another moment of physical
closeness with him.

The worst part was that they were not even close.
She had always tried to keep her distance.

Yet somehow the more she tried to avoid him, the more tangled things became. She had wanted to stay far
away.
Instead she had promised him she would stop avoiding him.
Quinn pressed herself against the car door, taking up as little space as possible on the seat.
It was obvious she was trying to stay far away from him.
When she was drunk, she had leaned toward him without hesitation, even getting impatient when she could not reach his abs.
Now that she was sober, she behaved as if distance was the safest option.
Julian almost laughed.
The way she was acting now made her look exactly like someone who had a one night stand and then pretended it never happened.
Julian said nothing. But his presence filled the entire car.
Quinn could smell the faint scent of cedar and cool cologne around him.
It was undeniably pleasant.
But every time she noticed that scent, her thoughts drifted somewhere dangerous. Back to the memory of his arms around her.
His chest had been firm yet comfortable. Leaning against him had felt strangely safe.
She had been with Chase for more than three years. Chase had never even held her hand.
Once, she had imagined what it might feel like to lean into the arms of someone she loved,
Chase never gave her that chance.
And somehow, through a strange twist of fate, the first time she experienced it had been in Julian’s arms.
A man who did not belong to her. A man she should never allow herself to want.
Those two moments of closeness were nothing more than a brief glitch in the path of fate.
Now everything needed to return to normal.
Julian suddenly spoke, “Any progress with the divorce?”
His voice was low and pleasant.
Quinn felt a faint tingling in her ears.
