Chapter 146 A Dangerous Topic

At that moment, Julian found himself unable to say the real answer. He couldn’t say that he wanted to help because he felt sorry for her.
Because the word “sorry” implied a certain closeness. An emotional distance that allowed one person to care deeply for another. And right now, there was no question about it.
Quinn’s heart was still very far away from his.
He didn’t even have the right to say he cared that much.
Quinn spoke first.
“Don’t tell me it’s because of Lucy,” she said. “Lucy has plenty of friends. I don’t see you going out of your way for the rest of them.”

She had already anticipated his most convenient explanation and shut it down before he could even use it.
Julian understood something clearly.
If he revealed his real feelings now, it would only push Quinn further away.
坚
So he said calmly, “You’re Lucy’s friend. That’s part of it. And there’s another reason.”
He paused briefly.
“I’ll admit that after those two… rather close encounters between us, I feel like I owe you something. That’s why I want to help.”
Sometimes a half–truth was easier for people to accept than the whole truth.
“Even though neither of those moments were intentional on your part,” Julian continued, “situations like that usually affect women more than men. Maybe because of that, I feel a little responsible.”
After finishing, he glanced at her.
The change in Quinn’s expression was obvious.
She relaxed slightly. She believed him.
His explanation sounded logical and reasonable.
“I guess that’s true,” Quinn said slowly. “Usually women end up at a disadvantage in situations like that. But honestly, you just got dragged into this. You really don’t owe me anything. If anything, I’m the one who should be apologizing.”
For Julian, those two moments had been nothing of the sort. They had felt more like unexpected gifts.
Something fate had given him out of pure mercy.
Julian said, “Well, the truth is that you’re the first woman I’ve ever had that kind of close contact with. That

probably makes the situation feel… a little different to me.”

He spoke calmly, “You don’t need to feel pressured about it. Someday when I have a girlfriend, things like this will probably happen more often. Once I’ve experienced it enough, I’m sure it’ll feel normal.”
Quinn looked at him in surprise.
The first? What does that mean? Is he saying he’s never been that close to a woman before? Not even a kiss?
Quinn instinctively touched her lips.
Her first kiss had happened unexpectedly. Was Julian saying that his had too?
“Even though it happened by accident,” Julian added, “a first kiss still carries a certain meaning for me.”
“Please stop.” Quinn said quickly.
Her cheeks flushed bright red, and even the tips of her ears felt hot. “I’m sorry…”
It was hard to imagine someone like Julian saying something like that.
And to make matters worse, the driver and security guard were sitting in the front seats.
Quinn was so embarrassed she could barely lift her head.
She had never been the carefree type.
Otherwise she wouldn’t have reached this age without ever kissing anyone.
But she had never expected Julian to be the same. He was already twenty–eight.
And with his status and influence, there must have been countless women around him. So how could he possibly still…
“I’m telling the truth,” Julian said while watching the color deepen along her ears. “You don’t believe me?”
“I believe you,” Quinn blurted quickly.
At that moment she honestly wanted to disappear. “Let’s just stop talking about this.”
After thinking for a moment, she added, “Honestly, in that situation it probably wouldn’t have mattered who was standing there. I might have ended up offending anyone. So please don’t feel like you owe me anything. I’m the one who should apologize.”
Julian’s voice cooled slightly. “It wouldn’t have mattered who it was?”
He paused briefly. “Well, you weren’t exactly thinking clearly at the time.”
Quinn could hear the faint displeasure in his tone.
But what she had said was the truth.
Considering the state she had been in on that yacht, it wasn’t like she had been carefully choosing who she

kissed.
The rest of the drive passed in silence. When they were getting close to campus, Quinn finally spoke again.
“Mr. Sterling, you can drop me off at the front gate.”
Outside vehicles usually weren’t allowed onto campus.
Besides, she didn’t want to inconvenience Julian. She didn’t have much luggage anyway.
“I can manage on my own,” she added. “You’re busy. I don’t want to take up more of your time.”
Julian replied calmly, “You already have.”
Quinn blinked in confusion.
Julian continued, “I told Lucy I’d help you carry your things. If I leave now, how am I supposed to explain that to her?”
His tone had returned to its usual distant composure.
Quinn lowered her gaze. “In that case, could you wait outside for a moment?”
But just as she finished speaking, she noticed the car heading straight toward the campus entrance.
The security gate lifted slowly. Quinn turned to look at Julian in surprise.
Julian didn’t look back. He simply sat there silently.
How could his car just drive onto campus like that?
The driver spoke politely from the front seat, “Miss Lane, which direction should we go?”
Quinn quickly gave directions. Within a few minutes, they reached her dorm building.
The holiday break meant the campus was nearly empty. The car pulled to a stop directly in front of the building.
