“Forget about that,” Zeke said. “You should be more worried about how you’re going to get out of this mess you’ve made withh Julian’s woman.”

Maddox was dumbfounded, asking, “Isn’t she Chase Sterling’s wife? How can she be Julian’s woman?”

Zeke didn’t know what was going on in Julian’s head either. After all, Quinn was married. If their names were linked, it woultri scandal.

“It doesn’t matter if she’s married or not,” he said. “She’s under Julian’s protection, understand? Stop making excusessaanich stal thinking about how to save your own skin.”

“Zeke, you know me!” Maddox pleaded. “Besides, Chase brought her to me himself!”

“But was she willing? If this gets out, it’s date rape!”

Maddox wasn’t afraid of much, but he was terrified of Julian getting serious. He usually avoided him like teplague.

“I didn’t even touch her!” Maddox yelled, ready to swear on his life. “Really! I didn’t get to do anything before you guys shower up!”

“You should be grateful you didn’t. Otherwise, I think he would have killed you.”

Maddox shivered, whispering, “He wouldn’t, would he? How would he explain that toorny faatiee??”

Zeke just smiled, “You think he’s afraid of your father?”

“Let me tell you something Chase told me! If I tell you, will you help me?”

Zeke wasn’t particularly interested, replying, “Let’s hear it?”

“Chase and Quinn have been married for three years, but he’s never touchiescher!”

“How is she?” Zeke asked, standing.

Julian gave him a cool glance and said nothing.

Alright, so we can’t even ask. He was being very protective. Zeke changed the subject.

“He just said that Chase hasn’t touched Quinn in three years. Did you know that?”

Julian’s head snapped toward him.

Zeke felt a thrill. Today had been worth it just to see the cracks in Julian’s stoic facade

Clearly, Julian hadn’t known. But he quickly composed himself and looked at Maddow..

“There’s a project at Dixon Group. You’ll be in charge of it.”

Maddox couldn’t believe it. The first thing Julian said to him was about work? He had always been a screw–up, and his family ne trusted him with anything important. Now Julian was giving him a project??

“Really? That’s great!”

Zeke looked at him with pity. Did he really think this was a good thing? Did he think there would be no consequences for what he did? A project from Julian, under these circumstances, was a death sentence.

“Since you have no objections,” Julian said, looking at Zeke, “send him abroad immediately.”

“Remember to keep your mouth shut about what happened today,” Zeke said, pitying him. “Otherwise, you won’t even know wha hit you.”

Julian didn’t deign to speak to him again. He had already called Bobby Dixon, Maddox’s father, on his way over. The project was in a godforsaken desert. Bobby was reluctant, but when Julian made a request, he couldn’t refuse.

Julian turned and left.

Zeke looked at Maddox with the pity one reserves for a child.

“Why don’t you confirm with your father?”

Maddox fumbled for his phone. After the call, he collapsed on the floor. The place was a hellhole. Three years there was a death

sentence,

“Remember to keep your mouth shut about what happened today,” Zeke said, pitying him. “Otherwise, you won’t even know what hit you.”

Maddox was on the verge of tears. This was a disaster he hadn’t asked for.

Julian had intended to confront Chase, but he changed his mind on the way.
