Lucy was still glued to her phone when she glanced up, then instantly froze.

Julian stood there, his expression tight and stormy, like something had just snapped.

She shot to her feet. “Julian…”

He didn’t even look at her. He walked straight past, eyes forward, like she didn’t exist.

Lucy felt a chill run down her spine. The energy around him felt dangerous, like he was one step away from blowing everything up.

She stood there for a second, stunned, then hurried over and dropped into the seat next to Quinn. “Quinn, what just happened to him?”

Quinn’s eyes were red.

Lucy’s voice jumped. “Wait, you were crying? What happened? Did he say something to you?”

Quinn shook her head quickly.

“Then what, he didn’t like your design or something?”

“No.” Quinn paused, then said quietly, “Lucy, I really don’t like Julian. I don’t want to see him again. Is that okay?*

Lucy blinked, clearly surprised. “You… don’t like him?” She nodded right away. “Okay, then don’t see him. That’s totally fine. But are you sure you’re okay?”

Quinn’s eyes were still red, but she didn’t cry.

Lucy frowned slightly.

This feels worse than if she just cried it out.

And Julian’s face just now, that hadn’t been normal either.

“Lucy, I’m sorry. If this makes things awkward for you, I can…”

“It doesn’t,” Lucy cut her off immediately. She had no idea what happened, but she trusted Quinn. “Whatever’s going on between you and him, it has nothing to do with us, okay?”

Her voice was soft, but completely sincere.

Quinn couldn’t hold it in anymore and pulled her into a tight hug.

Lucy patted her back gently. “He can be a jerk sometimes, seriously, don’t take it to heart.”

“I wasn’t exactly nice either,” Quinn admitted. “He’s probably really mad. I just… I won’t see him again.

Quinn had zero interest in shopping.

But she didn’t want Lucy to worry, so she forced a small smile. “Okay, let’s go.”

She let go of Lucy, then handed her the jewelry box. “This is his. Just give it back to him whenever.”

Lucy stuffed it into her bag without thinking twice. “Got it. Now come on, let’s go find something cute.” Neither of them expected they’d run into someone they really didn’t want to see.

Honestly, Quinn felt bad for Lucy.

Things between her and Julian were completely over. There was no going back, no reason to cross paths again.

What worried her was whether Julian might take it out on Lucy.

They walked out of the café and headed straight into the mall next door.

“Lucy, I’m sorry.” Quinn said. “If he ends up taking his mood out on you because of me…”

“Oh my god, stop apologizing,” Lucy said, looping her arm through hers. “Honestly, growing up I barely saw him anyway unless it was like Thanksgiving or Christmas, and even then we barely talked.”

Quinn nodded. “Okay.”

“Oh, right,” Lucy added, “have you talked to Jess? Should we invite him out?”

They both liked Jess a lot. Even though they hadn’t known each other long, it already felt like a real friendship.

“He went back home for something.” Quinn said. “He’ll be gone about a week. We can all grab dinner when he’s back.”

“Perfect,” Lucy said. “Come on, let’s see if anything actually catches our eye today.”

They wandered through stores casually, just going wherever felt interesting.

Lucy didn’t have that whole only–buy–designer attitude.

They chatted as they walked, sometimes stopping in small boutiques and picking out little things they liked.

They had just stepped out of one shop when Quinn noticed Lucy suddenly stop walking.

“What is it?”

Lucy lightly squeezed her hand. “Nothing, I just spotted someone I don’t like.”

Quinn followed her gaze.

She gave a small smile. “Well yeah, it’s a mall. What else would we be doing here?”

The tone wasn’t exactly welcoming.

One of the girls next to Clara immediately looked annoyed, about to say something, but Clara stopped her with a subtle pull.

The girl held back.

Clara kept smiling. “Lucy, we’re basically going to be family soon. Since we ran into each other, why don’t we shop together?”

Lucy frowned. “That’s a bit of a stretch. Since when are we family?”

Clara smiled calmly. “Didn’t you hear? Your cousin is getting engaged to my cousin.”
