Chapter 191 Crossing the Line

They had kissed.

Finished

There was no pretending otherwise, and once something like that happened, whatever invisible line had been there before was already gone.

Eventually, the hospital room quieted down until it was just the two of them.

The steady hum of machines filled the silence, soft but impossible to ignore.

Julian sat beside the bed, his eyes fixed on Quinn, watching her so closely it was like he was afraid she might disappear if he looked away.

When Lucy had called earlier, her voice tight as she told him Quinn had collapsed, his chest had locked up so hard he could barely breathe.

And when he actually saw her, pale, soaked in sweat, barely holding on, it was the first time he had ever felt truly panicked.

Now, sitting here with her, that panic had settled into something heavier.

A dull, constant ache he couldn’t shake.

Her skin had always been light, but now it looked drained, almost fragile.

He frowned slightly, studying her face.

Did she lose weight, or am I imagining it?

The doctor had told him everyone reacted differently to anesthesia, so there was no exact timeline for when she would wake up.

Julian reached out and brushed his fingers against the back of her hand.

It was cold.

His expression tightened immediately. He slid his hand down, checking her feet. Colder.

That was enough to get him moving.

He stood, went straight to the nurse’s station to ask, then called one of his people to bring over a hot water

bottle.

When he came back, he didn’t hesitate. He sat at the foot of the bed, carefully lifting her legs and settling her feet against his body, resting them in his lap.

The contact made his shoulders tense slightly.

Her skin was freezing.

A few minutes later, a bodyguard knocked and stepped inside, holding the hot water bottle.

The moment he saw the scene in front of him, he froze in place, completely speechless. Julian’s people were trained to stay composed no matter what, but this wasunexpected.

The hot water bottle had already been filled. Julian took it, glanced at it briefly, then said, You can step

out.

The man nodded and left without a word, closing the door behind him.

Out in the hallway, he paused, trying to process what he had just seen.

Inside. Julian tested the temperature of the bottle and frowned slightly.

Too hot.

He set it aside without hesitation.

This is safer.

Quinn didn’t wake up until sometime in the middle of the night.

It felt like she had been stuck in a long, confusing dream that refused to fully fade.

In that dream, she was in Julian’s car.

He had been telling her to apologize, and she got annoyed, arguing back, even hitting him.

And then somehow, it shifted.

She kissed him.

And not just that, she had climbed into his lap, straddling him, and she could still clearly remember the way his body reacted under her.

Before she even opened her eyes, the thought hit her hard.

That wasn’t just a dreamwas it?

Lucy had said Julian brought her back.

So that meantShe had actually done all of that?

Again?

Quinn slowly opened her eyes.

A dull ache spread through her lower abdomen, heavy and uncomfortable, grounding her immediately in reality.

Then she looked forward.

And froze. Julian was sitting at the foot of her bed.

And her feet. Were in his lap.

She instinctively flexed her toes, and the sensation was immediate, warm, solid, unmistakably him.

Her whole body tensed as she tried to pull back.

Julian caught her ankle without hesitation. Don’t move.

Her voice came out fast, flustered. What are you doing, let go.

Her feet were already warm now. There was no reason for this to continue.

But Julian didn’t move.

The memory of the night before sat heavy in his chest, especially the way she had looked at him afterward and said she didn’t remember anything.

Fine.

If she wanted to forget, he would make sure she had something she couldn’t ignore this time.

Julian looked at her steadily. What do you think I’m doing?

Heat rushed straight to her face. This wasn’t something people just did casually.

Holding hands was one thing. Sitting close was normal.

But thisThis was different.

He wasn’t just touching her. He was holding her feet against his body like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Her face burned, her voice unsteady, eyes already starting to sting. What do you even want from me?

Julian’s tone stayed calm, but there was a clear edge underneath. Nothing. The doctor said to keep you warm, so I am.

Quinn frowned, embarrassed and unconvinced. That’s not what they meant. There are other ways to do that.

Julian didn’t look away. So helping you is a problem now?

That shut her down immediately. He had been there the entire time.

Gotten her to the hospital. Waited through the surgery.

Stayed while she was unconscious.

She knew she should be grateful.
