Chapter 197 Cornered

Julian watched Quinn’s reaction, the way her ears turned red before the color spread across her face, and something about it made him feel unexpectedly satisfied.
He didn’t hide it. “You were looking for a caregiver, right? I’ll take the job.”
Quinn blinked, caught completely off guard. “You? No way.”
Julian leaned casually against the bed, completely at ease. “What, you think I’d do worse than a hired nurse? And I cost less.”
“That’s not the point.” Quinn said quickly, her embarrassment instantly replaced by alarm. “If I hire someone, it’s going to be a woman.”
Julian didn’t argue loudly, just spoke like it was obvious. “When you had your procedure, did you ask for a female surgeon only? Some things don’t work like that.”
“That’s different,” Quinn shot back, realizing too late how easily he was steering the conversation. “Doctors are there to treat patients. A caregiver is personal. I get to choose.”
Julian didn’t move. He simply looked at her, steady, unhurried. “Not this time. I’m doing it.”
That look alone made her pulse jump.
His voice softened, almost coaxing. “Quinn, just say it. Say you want me to take care of you.”
His eyes held hers, deep and unreadable. She didn’t even realize when she stopped thinking.
“I… okay…”
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Julian’s lips curved slightly. He reached out and gave her cheek a light squeeze. “Good. Then it’s settled.”
The moment his hand left her face, reality hit.
Quinn froze.
What did I just say?! No, no, no, that doesn’t count. That absolutely does not count.
She opened her mouth immediately. “Wait, I didn’t mean that, I was just-”
Julian cut her off without raising his voice. “You’ve changed your mind before. This time, I’m holding you to it.”
Quinn shook her head. “I said it wrong, I wasn’t thinking-”
“Hey.” Julian lifted a finger and lightly touched her lips, stopping her.
“You need to rest,” he said, calm and unbothered. “The doctor said you’ll need to get up and move later, so don’t waste your energy arguing.”

Then, as if it just occurred to him, he added, “Actually… shouldn’t I help you get dressed first?”
Quinn’s brain went blank for a second.
Then-
“No! I can do it myself!”
Julian’s tone stayed easy, almost amused. “I don’t mind helping.”
“I said no!”
She grabbed the blanket and pulled it tight around herself like armor.
Julian placed his hand lightly on top of it, not forcing anything, just waiting. “That’s not very cooperative. A caregiver is supposed to help with everything.”
Her voice almost broke. “Please don’t do this…”
He watched her for a moment, then relented slightly. “Alright. Then let’s make a deal.”
Quinn looked at him, tense.
“I won’t help you get dressed,” he said, “but you agree to let me take care of you. No backing out.”
Quinn nodded immediately, not even thinking it through. “Okay, fine.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed slightly, amused. “And you mean it this time?”
“I mean it!”
“You’ve said that before.”
“I won’t take it back this time, I swear,” Quinn said quickly, almost raising her hand like she was in court. “If I’m lying, then I—”
Julian covered her mouth again, this time more gently. “There’s one more thing.”
Quinn blinked at him.
For a second, he just looked at her like that, and something in his chest tightened in a way he didn’t quite
expect.
“Don’t avoid me,” he said finally. “And the clothes you promised to make, you finish them. No disappearing after.”
Quinn hesitated.
If I say yes… everything goes back to where it was.
Then what was all that distance for?

Julian’s voice dropped slightly. “Or I can help you get dressed right now. Your choice.”
“I said yes,” Quinn blurted out immediately. “I’ll do it, I won’t avoid you,”
Julian let go of her, a quiet laugh escaping. “Good. Don’t go back on it.”

At this point. Quinn knew she had no way out. There was no scenario where she would let him see her like that.
“I’ll change myself,” she said, her voice small. “Can you step outside?”
Julian nodded easily this time. “Relax. I’m not going to mess with you.”
He gave her cheek one last light pinch before walking out and closing the door.
The second the door shut, Quinn exhaled hard.
She barely had time to move before the door opened again.
Her whole body tensed. But it wasn’t Julian.
A middle–aged woman walked in, warm expression, the kind of person who looked like she had done this job for years.
“You’re Quinn, right?” she said. “I’m your caregiver.”
Quinn thought back to that faint, knowing look in his eyes, and it clicked.
He had been messing with her.
There was no way he was ever going to help her get
dressed.
And there was even less chance he would look at her body without her consent.
He had probably arranged for a private nurse a ahead of time. He would never put her in that kind of
situation.
She had just been too on edge, too flustered, and that gave him the perfect opening to push her into agreeing not to avoid him anymore.
