Chapter 219 Too Close to Ignore
What Quinn had always wanted from Chase was never complicated, it was something steady and grounding, the kind of warmth that felt like home, something close to family rather than anything
romantic or intense.

But when it came to Julian, everything inside her reacted differently, and she couldn’t pretend otherwise.
Around him, her face would heat up before she even realized it, her heartbeat would lose its rhythm, and there was always this quiet, lingering tension she couldn’t shake, because her thoughts kept drifting somewhere they shouldn’t.
She used to think sayings like drunk words are sober thoughts or dreams come from what you dwell on during the day were just clichés, but now she knew better.
It was because there was something buried deep in her feelings for him, something she didn’t dare put into words, that when her guard was down, whether from alcohol or sleep, she ended up crossing lines she would normally never even approach.
So this is who I really am?
She had never thought of herself as someone driven by desire, never imagined she could lose control like
that.
But she remembered reading once that when you truly wanted someone, it was never just emotional, there was always a physical pull, something instinctive and undeniable.
Love and desire were never cleanly separated, no matter how much people tried to pretend otherwise.
Over the past few days, a thought had surfaced more than once, reckless and dangerous in a way she couldn’t ignore.
What if I just stop overthinking everything? What if I just give in once and get it out of my system?
If she crossed that line with Julian, maybe he would lose interest afterward.
And maybe she could finally quiet the part of herself that kept spiraling whenever he was near.
But every time the thought went too far, she pulled herself back.
That wasn’t who she wanted to be.
She had assumed that once she left the hospital, whatever connection existed between her and Julian would naturally fade, like something temporary that didn’t belong in her real life.
Instead, he brought her back to his place as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
Even so, she had already made up her mind that she would leave the next day, no matter what.
“I’m taking you out for a bit,” Julian said, breaking the silence in a tone that sounded casual, but left no room for argument.

Quinn blinked, pulled out of her thoughts. “Where are we going?”

“Just around the neighborhood,” Julian replied, his voice steady. “Doctor said you shouldn’t stay cooped up, you need to move a little.”
Quinn immediately pictured what that would look like, the two of them walking side by side after dinner, close enough that it would feel natural for him to reach for her hand, and knowing him, he probably would.
That image alone made her uneasy.
Because it would look exactly like a date.
And they were not that.
“I want to call Lucy first,” she said, buying herself a moment.
“Go ahead,” Julian answered easily.
The call connected almost instantly, and Lucy’s voice came through, shaky and upset. “Quinn, a bunch of the windows got damaged from the fire, and now they’re saying we might have to redo part of the place, so I’m thinking about moving back to my old apartment for a while. Where are you staying tonight? I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.”
Quinn hadn’t even had the chance to respond when Julian leaned in slightly, his voice low and close to her ear, calm and matter–of–fact.
“She’s staying with me for the next few days, don’t worry about it.”
There was a pause on the other end, just long enough to feel dangerous.
Then Lucy’s voice jumped in pitch. “Wait, what? You guys are living together now?“.
Quinn’s heart dropped. “It’s not like that, I just…”
Julian didn’t interrupt her, he just stood there watching, completely composed, as if the situation unfolding in front of him had nothing to do with him.
Quinn shot him an annoyed look, then hung up before things got worse.
“You did that on purpose,” she said, her frustration finally showing.
Julian tilted his head slightly, looking almost unfairly calm. “I just told her the truth.”
That was exactly the problem.
Quinn had never wanted Lucy to know she was staying here, because from Lucy’s perspective, things between her and Julian were already complicated enough.
Just a couple of days ago, Lucy had even asked her outright if they had kissed.
They hadn’t defined anything, hadn’t crossed that kind of line in any official sense, and yet things kept drifting in that direction anyway.

Now, on top of everything else, Lucy knew they were living under the same roof.
No one would look at that situation and assume nothing was going on.
And that made it worse.
Because Quinn already felt like she was keeping too much from Lucy, holding back things she couldn’t explain without exposing everything she didn’t even fully understand herself.
Now it felt like she had crossed into something she couldn’t undo.
“I’m not staying here,” she said, turning toward the bedroom as if leaving immediately would fix everything. “I’m going.”
“Quinn.”
Julian closed the distance in a few steps and caught her hand before she could walk away.
“Let go,” she said, her voice tightening, frustration mixing with something softer she didn’t want to acknowledge. “You said you wouldn’t force me.”
“Quinn,” Julian said, not raising his voice, but holding her there just enough to make sure she wouldn’t pull away, “tell me why you’re upset, and why Lucy knowing this matters so much.”
“She’s going to get the wrong idea,” Quinn said, taking a breath, trying to steady herself before her emotions slipped further. “And I don’t even know how I’d explain it if she asked.”
Julian didn’t seem convinced. “Why do you need to explain anything at all?”
“Because you don’t have to,” she replied quickly, her words coming faster now. “You’re her cousin, she respects you, she won’t question you, but she and I are different, we tell each other everything, and this…”
She stopped, unable to finish the sentence.
“This what,” Julian asked, watching her closely, “something you can’t say out loud?”
Quinn let out a breath, then said it anyway, her voice lower now. “What am I supposed to say, that after what happened on the yacht, I got drunk twice and couldn’t keep my hands off you? I don’t care how close we are, I can’t say that to her.”
Julian’s expression didn’t change much, but there was a flicker of something in his eyes.
“Then say it differently,” he said.
Quinn frowned, confused. “Say what differently?”
Julian met her gaze directly, his tone steady, like he had already thought this through.
“Tell her I’m into you,” he said. “Tell her I’m trying to date you.”
Quinn’s breath caught, and she stared at him as if she hadn’t heard him correctly.

The shock in her eyes was immediate and impossible to hide.

Julian noticed it, of course he did, and for a moment he wanted to pull her closer, to close the distance she kept trying to maintain, but he held himself back.
“Isn’t that what this is,” he continued, his voice calm but deliberate, “or did you think I’ve been spending all this time with you because I had nothing better to do?”
He was never someone with free time to waste.
Lucy had said that herself more than once, that Julian’s schedule was packed to the point where even a normal day felt like too much.
And yet recently, he had been showing up for Quinn, again and again.
That wasn’t something she could ignore.
The initial shock faded, replaced by something softer, something that settled quietly in her chest and refused to go away.
Her heartbeat picked up again, faster this time, uneven in a way she couldn’t control.
He’s serious.
He said he was trying to date her.
