Rosalie smiled sweetly. “I just got here too. I ordered your favorite coffee. Want anything else?”

Anyone she tried to befriend usually ended up on her side.

She was sharp and smooth when it came to people.

That was why she was confident she could make Chase fall for her again.

What she hadn’t expected was how firmly Chase believed he was now in love with Quinn.

Rosalie never went into anything without a plan.

Besides, she knew better than to rush things.

She’d been cold to him not long ago–it was only natural he’d be defensive.

She didn’t bring up their past or ask why he’d turned to Quinn.

Instead, she switched to lighter topics.

Rosalie knew how to charm men, and she had plenty of them wrapped around her finger for a reason.

She could talk effortlessly about almost anything.

More than that, she knew Chase inside out–exactly what he liked to hear.

Before long, they were chatting animatedly.

When she saw him going along with her topics, Rosalie breathed a quiet sigh of relief.

Glancing at her watch, she said, “We haven’t had a meal together since I got back. Chase, won’t you treat me to a welcome dinner?”

She smiled softly, playfully, the way she knew he liked.

Chase couldn’t bring himself to say no. “Of course. Whatever you want.”

Rosalie kept smiling. “You forgot? We like the same things. Whatever you pick is fine with me.”

Chase knew he’d been slow to figure out his own heart, but now that he had, he wouldn’t change his mind.

As for Rosalie–after all those years, he’d moved on, but he didn’t mind staying friends.

He just wouldn’t dote on her the way he used to.

Put bluntly, he wasn’t going to be her fool anymore.

Rosalie, though, thought she’d won him back over.

But when she met up with him two more times, she realized something was off.

Before, Chase had spent money on her without hesitation–lavishly, even.

Anything she so much as glanced at, he’d buy for her.

But these past few times, after they ate, when they went shopping and she paused at pretty accessories, Chase didn’t react at all.

Helpless, Rosalie ended up paying for them herself.

She didn’t have that much money, and her card nearly maxed out.

She’d bought them just to save face, but once she got home, she regretted it so much she decided to return the items.

By pure coincidence, she ran into Quinn right then.

Quinn was shopping for Christmas gifts for Adele and Lucy.

She’d never have splurged on something so expensive for herself, but for Adele and Lucy, she wanted to get them something nice.

She never expected to run into Rosalie.

Rosalie was trying to return the items, and the staff was being unkind about it.

Most stores allowed returns, but hardly anyone who shopped here actually came back to get a refund.
