Camilla spent two days sewing two quilts for Barbara. Nowadays, you could buy any kind of quilt you wanted, but Barbara always said the ones Camilla made felt different. They were warm but still light, and somehow, they felt like home.
When Adah heard that, she didn’t even hesitate. She told Camilla she’d have to make new quilts for Barbara every year from now on.
Camilla looked at the finished quilts and gave a small, bittersweet smile. If only Barbara really was her sister. If only Barbara didn’t hate her. Ever since Barbara came back, their parents had changed, and even Camilla’s friends had drifted away. Everyone acted like Camilla had gained a wonderful new sister. Barbara was always so nice to her, and her adoptive parents seemed to treat her the same as always.
On the surface, it looked like Camilla had a pretty good life. But only now did she realize that the day Barbara returned, she lost her sense of home. These two quilts... This would be the last time she’d ever make them.
She took the quilts to Barbara, and on her way back, her phone rang. It was Daniel.
“Come to a party with me Saturday afternoon. It’s on a yacht,” Daniel said. “Dress up. I mean it.”
“I’m not going,” Camilla replied.
“Camilla, what’s wrong with you lately? If you’re trying to get my attention, fine, you got it. Happy now?”
When you still care, every word lands like a wound; when you don’t, it all turns into noise you can ignore.
For the first time, Camilla felt how easy it could be to just let go.
She said, “Think whatever you want. Daniel, I’m serious about the divorce.”
She hung up right after.
First things first, she needed to make her feelings clear to Daniel. After that, she still had to talk to Lean and Adah. But for now, all she wanted to do was focus on the competition she had signed up for. Once it was over, she’d sit down for a real talk with her parents. They cared a lot about their reputation, but she had a feeling that if she acted firmly, they’d respect her choice.
Her phone, left on silent, lit up with call after call, but she was too focused to notice.
Meanwhile, Barbara was desperately trying to get ahold of Camilla, so frustrated she nearly threw her phone across the room. Then Daniel started calling too, whining that Camilla kept talking about divorce and didn’t seem to be joking this time. He wanted to know what to do.
Seriously? How was she supposed to know? Barbara cursed under her breath. How could this man be so useless? He couldn’t even keep Camilla in line.
At least she could be grateful she’d pushed Daniel to marry Camilla back then. If she hadn’t, he probably would have tried to cling to her, and she had zero interest in a guy like that.
The man she actually liked was...
Her phone buzzed, snapping her out of her thoughts. She grabbed it in a hurry.
