“Come on,” Lambert said. “I was already planning to stop by and see you in the next couple of days.”

Susan just smiled and shook her head. “You think I don’t know what you’re really here for? Don’t bother looking for her. She’s already gone.”

Lambert always felt at ease around Susan. That’s probably why she could read him so easily. He knew she was teasing him and couldn’t help but laugh. “You really enjoy giving me a hard time, don’t you? Am I that entertaining?”

“I don’t get many chances to laugh at you,” Susan replied, her eyes twinkling. “Why shouldn’t I have some fun?”

“So, why did she stop by today?” Lambert asked. “Has her cold gotten any better?”

Susan fixed him with a knowing look. “You even know about her cold? Come on, just be honest with me. What’s really going on in that head of yours?”

Lambert wasn’t about to hide anything. Not from her. “Once she’s really single again, I’m going after her. Simple as that.”

“She told me she’s getting divorced,” Susan said. “You know, I’ve known Cammie for a long time. She’s a good person. All I want to know is… are you really serious about this, Lambert?”

He met her gaze without flinching. “Do you think I’d treat someone’s feelings like a game?”

Susan let out a long breath. “It’s not that I don’t trust you. But honestly… the gap between you two is huge. Family, status, reputation. Maybe that doesn’t matter to you, but Cammie might care a lot more than you think.”

“I get it,” Lambert said quietly. “I’ve thought all of that through. You don’t need to worry. I have a plan.”

“That’s good to hear,” she said. “I’m not going to give you a big lecture about not letting her down or being together forever. Love is unpredictable. But if you promise me anything, let it be this—don’t ever do anything to hurt her. Love her fully while you do. And if one day you don’t, let her go gently.”

Lambert dropped his eyes, staring at the patterns carved into the tabletop. “For me, there’s no letting go. If it’s her, then it’s for life.”

Susan looked at him with a mix of affection and concern. “Being loyal is great, but only if she really wants to be with you. You get what I’m saying, right?”

“Also, what about your family?” Susan’s tone turned worried. “Will they be okay with this?”

Lambert shrugged. “Do you really think they can control me?”

She relented, but her concern lingered. “You’re independent, sure. But you have to think about whether they’ll cause trouble for Cammie. And whether she can handle that.”

“Thank you. I’ll keep it in mind.”

Susan relaxed a bit, satisfied. She’d always trusted Lambert—he was steady and dependable, the kind of man anyone would want for someone they cared about. If he and Cammie really ended up together, she would honestly be happy for them.

Lambert made his way to the door, then looked back with a crooked grin. “If you get the chance,” Lambert said with a crooked grin, “remind her that five years doesn’t make me ancient.”
