Lambert had never once been bothered by things like his age, height, or looks. He carried a natural presence wherever he went, and his confidence came from his abilities, not from how he looked or how old he was. Lambert’s confidence had never come from his age or his looks—it came from knowing he could handle whatever was put in front of him. He was the kind of man who could look at the world from above, not because of anything superficial, but because he’d earned every inch of his place up there.
Age, appearance, height… none of it had ever mattered. Not until today.
Camilla caught him completely off guard. For the first time, someone actually managed to rattle him. He’d never been so thrown by anyone or anything before. Camilla was in a league of her own.
After saying goodbye to Susan, Lambert didn’t see Camilla or hear from her for three whole days. She was tied up working on sketches for Ladd, and during those three days, she and Ladd managed to meet three times. One of those times, Camilla even had to meet him at his hotel’s business lounge. She really had no choice since Ladd’s schedule was packed, and he’d set a business meeting at the hotel. Camilla rushed over, reserved a small meeting room, and squeezed in a quick consult.
Three meetings later, they’d finally wrapped up the rough draft for the design. Next, it was just about ironing out the details. Ladd was particular, almost to a fault, with sky-high standards for the jewelry sketches. Every time they met, he’d slip into talking about his wife—little habits she had, funny stories from their marriage. The more he talked, the more Camilla caught a glimpse of how deep his love ran.
Just like Latonia had said, it was the kind of love most people can only envy. Ladd had it together—successful, polished, and loyal. There were so many men out there with half his success who still messed around, but Ladd was devoted. If anything, Camilla found herself respecting him more and more.
She went home and told Catheleen about it. Catheleen shook her head, almost smiling. “I heard from Latonia—he and his wife have been married thirty years. They’re the gold standard for couples around here.”
Then Catheleen’s tone got more serious. “By the way, has Daniel’s dad reached out yet?”
Camilla shook her head. “I want to finish this sketch before I go find him.”
Catheleen nodded. “Right, just get the divorce over with. Then our Cammie can go find someone who really deserves her. You see? Honest, loving men like Ladd do exist. The world’s not only full of jerks like Daniel, right?”
Camilla gave a little laugh. “How many Ladds are there, honestly? But I’ll be fine, with or without a boyfriend. Don’t worry about me.”
She went back to the hotel, where Ladd greeted her at the door and explained the situation with a rueful smile. He’d had a dinner meeting, drank a little, and didn’t dare go home. His wife always worried about his health and hated his drinking. If she found out, she’d be worried and mad at the same time, he told Camilla as he poured her a glass of water.
“I really am sorry for calling you here so late,” he added.
Camilla shook her head. “Don’t worry, it’s part of my job.”
They looked over the earrings together while Camilla shared her new ideas for the design, but Ladd was still on the fence. Time went by faster than she realized, and when he finally nodded in approval, Camilla checked her phone. It was almost eleven. Definitely later than she’d planned.
Ladd frowned, concern obvious in his eyes. “It’s really late. It’s late, and it’s snowing—I'd feel better if someone drove you home. How about I have someone drive you?”
