Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 145

She’d never gone through anything like this before, being humiliated in front of a crowd. Even though she knew it was all a misunderstanding, having so many people pointing, whispering, and judging her left her completely lost. She didn’t even know how to react.

“What’s wrong with you people?” Catheleen rushed over, pulling Camilla behind her like she was shielding her from a storm.

“You need to stay out of this,” Maddox snapped. He was furious, protective of his mother, and right now, nothing anyone did seemed right to him. “She’s a homewrecker,” Maddox snapped. “People have a right to call her out.”

“Do you even know what you’re saying?” Camilla narrowed her eyes, putting herself between Maddox and Catheleen, afraid things might get physical. “You’ve got it all wrong. Yes, I know Ladd, but my work brings me into contact with him. That’s it.”

“You’re young and pretty. Isn’t there anything better you could do? Why be someone’s side piece?”

“That’s right. Girls like her used to get destroyed for this,” someone muttered.

“For money? They’d do absolutely anything. It’s honestly shameless.”

The crowd worked themselves into a frenzy, their words like stones being thrown. Camilla could feel growing anger twisting in her chest, but she forced her voice to stay calm. “Get Ladd here. I want to talk to him directly, in front of everyone.”

“You want a confrontation? You two probably already rehearsed your story.” Maddox kept one hand on his mother, glaring. He looked like he wanted to throw a punch, but the way he’d been raised held him back. Even his mother, furious as she was at the supposed mistress, couldn’t bring herself to slap or claw.

If anything, Camilla figured, she was getting off easy.

She took a steadying breath and grabbed her phone, ready to call Ladd. But before she could dial, someone from the crowd reached out, knocking her phone out of her hand. It clattered to the ground.

“Why are you even trying to be polite to someone like her?”

“She’s got zero shame. I’d be mortified if I was her family.”

“I don’t know how her parents raised her. If my daughter ever did something like this, I’d disown her.”

“What a disgrace, bringing shame to her own family.”

“What’s going on?” Henrietta’s voice was trembling, but she was done holding back. “You really want to ask that, Ladd? After all these years, I never thought you’d hurt me like this—not at your age.”

“What are you talking about?” Ladd stepped forward, reaching for her but she shook him off.

“Don’t touch me! She’s the mistress. How long were you planning to keep lying to me?”

“That’s not true.” Ladd looked over at Camilla. “Everyone, you’re mistaken. Ms. Green and I, things aren’t the way you think.”

“You’re still making excuses!” Henrietta’s eyes were red with tears. After so many years together, this betrayal was too much to handle. “You’re still lying. You—”

Her voice shook as she pointed at Camilla. “She’s standing right there. Isn’t that proof enough? How long do you think you can fool me?”

Camilla finally spoke up, her voice almost breaking. “Mrs. Clark, you’ve got this all wrong. Ladd and I only met a week ago…”
