Catheleen could feel that Lambert was upset. She answered him carefully, “I, um, I drove here myself.”
“I’ll get someone to drive your car back,” Lambert said, clearly not open to negotiation. “Get in my car.”
Catheleen had been super worked up just a minute ago. In that state, Lambert definitely wasn’t going to let her get behind the wheel. And Lambert wasn’t about to give Catheleen another chance to get handsy and call it a joke.
She glanced at Camilla. “Cammie, is it alright if we ride back with Lambert?”
Camilla didn’t say much. Her thick lashes fluttered for a second and she just nodded quietly. Right now, all she wanted was to get out of there.
Catheleen held her hand and led her to the car.
After Camilla got settled in the back seat, Catheleen was just about to slide in next to her when Lambert called out behind her. “You sit in the front.”
Without a word of protest, Catheleen headed straight for the passenger seat.
Camilla’s eyes flicked up, surprise and tension all over her face.
Lambert caught it, too. He let out a small, silent sigh and gently closed the back door for her.
He spoke to his driver. “Go bring Catheleen’s car around.”
The driver realized Lambert was planning to drive them himself. He hurried to open the driver’s side door, helped Lambert in, closed the door behind him, then walked off to fetch the other car.
Once Lambert settled into the driver’s seat, Camilla’s whole body relaxed just a bit. She had honestly been afraid Lambert might sit in the back with her. Sure, the car was big and fancy, but that wouldn’t have made her feel any less trapped if she had to share the back seat with a man like him. Especially someone with Lambert’s kind of energy. Just picturing him next to her made her feel surrounded.
Thankfully, he had taken the wheel.
Still, she couldn't help but wonder why he wanted Catheleen up front.
Camilla had no clue, but Catheleen had a good idea. The way Lambert looked at her a few minutes ago, he probably wanted to smack her. All just because she kissed Cammie in front of him. He couldn’t do what he wanted, but she could. Yeah, he was totally jealous.
Such a jealous guy.
In the back seat, Camilla took a deep breath and gradually calmed down. Then she spoke up. “Mr. White, thank you so much for everything today. If you hadn’t shown up, I have no idea how I would have been able to clear my name.”
Catheleen joined in. “Yeah, Ladd is such a jerk! How could he do something that vile?” Catheleen hissed. “He could’ve ruined her life.”
Lambert turned his eyes on them for a second. “You did well today. When something went wrong, you called me.”
Catheleen grinned. “Aren’t I the best? So, how are you going to reward me?”
“Tell me what you want,” Lambert said simply.
Catheleen’s eyes lit up, a huge smile spreading across her face. “You’re too good to me. So, can I have one of those jewelry pieces you collect?”
Lambert raised an eyebrow in her direction.
Catheleen shrank back right away. “I’m kidding, seriously, just kidding,” she said, laughing nervously.
