Thanks to the melatonin, Camilla actually managed to get a decent night's sleep. Catheleen stayed in with her the whole day. She didn’t even leave the house, just hung out with Camilla like a protective shadow.
That afternoon, Camilla’s phone buzzed with a message. She checked her bank app and saw a hefty deposit. It had to be from Ladd.
Catheleen looked over and grinned. “At least the guy knows what's good for him! Don’t let it go to waste. Honestly, you deserve every penny. Consider it your emotional damages fund.”
Camilla barely hesitated. “Oh, I’m definitely accepting it. Why shouldn’t I? I spent time and energy on all this, so it’s only fair.”
“Exactly,” Catheleen nodded, then turned suddenly thoughtful. “Hey, Cammie, seriously, what do you think about Lambert?”
Camilla blinked, caught off guard. “Lambert? What do you mean? Like, in which way?”
Catheleen started counting off on her fingers. “You know, his character, looks, what he can do, his personality, all that. Give me your honest take.”
Camilla thought about it. “Me? Um… honestly, he’s great in every category. Lambert’s probably the most impressive guy I’ve ever met.”
“See? He totally is,” Catheleen agreed, leaning in, her eyes a little too eager. “So… do you like him? What do you feel when you’re around him?”
Camilla hesitated, then just shrugged. “Honestly? Mostly, I’m kind of intimidated by him.”
“What? Why?” Catheleen asked, tilting her head.
Camilla gave her a look. “Don’t you get nervous around him too?”
Catheleen laughed. “That’s different. He’s just super strict with me. Everyone in the family spoils me, but he never really smiles. But why are you intimidated?”
Camilla stared at the ceiling for a second. “He just has this… aura. Like he’s way up there,” she gestured vaguely, “untouchable or something. He’s powerful and intense, and it feels like we live in totally different worlds.”
Catheleen waved her hands. “I don’t know, I feel like he’s actually really gentle with you.”
Camilla snorted and burst into laughter.
Camilla frowned. “You heard I was cheating… was that about the thing with Ladd?”
“Yeah,” Jackson admitted. “Someone called me and said you had an affair with Ladd. I asked around more and realized it was a big misunderstanding.”
Camilla’s tone went flat. “You don’t actually have to apologize, Mr. Jackson. The truth is, if you already think I’m the kind of person who would cheat, it makes sense that you’d believe whatever people tell you. Since that’s already what you think of me, there’s no need to say sorry.”
Jackson sounded frustrated. “Hey now, it’s not like that. You can’t blame me. Someone told me, of course I got angry.”
“If you really knew me and trusted me, you would have at least doubted the rumor for a minute,” Camilla said, her words coming out cool and clear. “But you didn’t even bother to ask me. You just announced I was guilty. Thanks to this, I finally see what you all really think of me.”
“Camilla—”
“You don’t have to say anything else,” Camilla cut him off. “Just make sure Daniel shows up to court on time. I’m telling the judge everything that happened. If you’re worried our divorce will cause problems for the company, then you should talk some sense into him and get him to sign the papers.”
