Camilla continued, "I'm not throwing a tantrum, and I'm definitely not losing my temper. I am simply expressing my direct feelings. It's really that simple."
"No reason at all?" Lambert's voice was dangerously low. "You can't just hate me for absolutely no reason."
Beneath the cold edge of his tone, there was an unmistakable undercurrent of hurt.
Camilla offered a faint, polite smile that was entirely devoid of warmth.
"I don't need a reason. It's just a gut reaction. Just like how I don't like black licorice..."
"That's because black licorice has a bitter, overpowering taste," Lambert countered. "You hate it for a specific trait. So what specific trait of mine do you hate?"
Camilla couldn't fathom why he was so obsessed with getting to the bottom of this.
What was the point?
More importantly, she couldn't articulate the real reason.
And she wasn't about to lie.
"Are you refusing to say it because you genuinely don't know, or because you can't bring yourself to say it?" Lambert held her gaze. "Or is this all just an elaborate excuse to keep running away from me?"
"Mr. White," Camilla finally sighed. "Why do you absolutely need an answer? If it weren't for a bizarre twist of fate, our paths never would have crossed. Can't we just pretend we never met?"
"The problem is, we did meet. And I cannot simply erase what happened between us."
"Why torture yourself over this? You must be incredibly busy every day. There is absolutely no need to waste your time on me."
"Camilla."
He suddenly said her name.
Her full name.
Camilla's heart gave a violent jolt.
A mixture of fear and panic washed over her.
Staring right at her, he asked, "Do you honestly believe I can't just bulldoze my way through life?"
Camilla didn't dare look into his eyes.
Steeling her resolve, she gritted her teeth. "You forced me into this."
She finally met his gaze, her voice freezing over. "This is exactly what I hate about you. You always act so superior. You were born at the finish line. I shouldn't say I envy you—I resent you. People like you will never understand what it's like for ordinary people. We are not from the same social class, Mr. White. So why try to force your way into my world?"
"So, what you hate is my status, my position, and my family background," Lambert said, his dark eyes fixed on her without blinking. "You don't hate me as a person."
Camilla panicked. "Lambert White, are you completely deaf to what I'm saying?"
How else was she supposed to spell it out for him to understand?
But Lambert just smiled. "You finally dared to say my name?"
Camilla froze.
