"Lambert? What are you doing here? When did you get here?" Catheleen asked, her eyes widening in surprise.
Lambert lied without missing a beat. "Just passing by. I've been here a minute."
"W-what do you want?" Catheleen panicked slightly, stepping protectively in front of Camilla. "Lambert, she doesn't want to see you."
She was usually carefree and hadn't thought much of the text she'd sent him earlier. Now it hit her—Lambert had definitely shown up because of her message.
"Let's talk over there," Catheleen suggested. She didn't dare grab his arm, so she just pointed.
Lambert's gaze drifted to Camilla. The woman had clearly had too much to drink. A soft, rosy flush dusted her cheeks, and she was slumped over the table, half her face squished against her folded arms, entirely out of it.
Lambert stepped aside with Catheleen, ensuring Camilla remained in his line of sight. "What is it?"
"Look," Catheleen began, gathering her courage. "I know you're interested in Cammie, but she doesn't feel the same way. Please don't force her."
Having grown up in elite circles, Catheleen knew how things worked. Even though she wasn't incredibly close to the older generation, she was well aware that wealthy marriages were often glittering on the outside and rotting on the inside. Even if Lambert ended up marrying Jeanette, it was highly likely they'd both live separate lives behind closed doors. She found it hard to imagine her strict, traditionally aloof cousin cheating on his future wife, but it was so commonplace in their world that most people didn't bat an eye.
If Lambert wanted a mistress, it wouldn't be a scandal. But if the woman he wanted was Camilla—and Camilla was repulsed by the idea—Catheleen was going to stand by her best friend. There were plenty of women in the world; he could easily find someone else.
Lambert's expression darkened. "She told you she doesn't like me?"
"She doesn't even want to look at you," Catheleen muttered. "Just don't push her. As a favor to me, let her go. Can you do that?"
Lambert stared at her, his gaze completely frigid. Catheleen wanted to tug his sleeve and plead, but she didn't dare.
