Of course she was uncomfortable. But sitting right in front of Lambert, Camilla didn't want to admit any weakness.
Instead, she asked, "Where's Catheleen?"
"I sent her home."
Camilla felt too guilty to call her friend back to take care of her, but looking at Lambert's posture, he clearly had no intention of leaving.
She quickly said, "Could you please call a nurse for me?"
"Do you need something?" Lambert asked. "Or are you in pain?"
"I want to hire a private caregiver," Camilla replied. "It would just be more convenient."
"No need," Lambert stated flatly. "I'll take care of you."
Her entire body stiffened in rejection. "That... absolutely not! Please stop joking. We aren't related, we're barely..."
"Barely anything?" Lambert’s gaze pinned her down. "If we're barely anything, does that mean you can just kiss me, hug me, and touch me whenever you please?"
"Stop talking..."
Camilla was practically vibrating with humiliation. But Lambert wasn't about to let her off the hook that easily. He was furious. How could she just grope him, kiss him, and then refuse to own up to it? What did she take him for?
"I'm only stating the facts. I didn't invent them," Lambert pointed out smoothly. "If you can kiss and touch me whenever the mood strikes, shouldn't I be allowed to do the same?"
Camilla wanted to burrow beneath the mattress. All she could manage was a pathetic, "I'm sorry..."
She knew Lambert wouldn't lie about something like this. Which meant that yesterday in his car, she had assaulted him again. It was even worse than the first time. Why did she turn into such a disaster the second liquor touched her lips? If she were sober, she’d rather die than do something so outrageous. Why did alcohol completely warp her personality? And of all the men in the world to repeatedly accost, why did it always have to be Lambert?
She silently vowed to never touch another drop of alcohol for as long as she lived. It was a literal death wish.
