"Don't say things like that," Lambert's expression instantly darkened. "I don't believe for a second that you'd throw yourself at just anyone."

Camilla practically ground her back teeth to dust.

He was right. She absolutely couldn't do that with a stranger. Subconsciously, she had wanted to be close to him. But it was wrong. She couldn't allow her heart to sink any deeper into this dangerous territory.

"You aren't me. How do you know what I would or wouldn't do?" Forcing herself to calm down, she bluffed, "Fine, I'll tell you the truth. It's because you're tall and devastatingly handsome. I wouldn't be losing out either way."

Lambert let out a dark chuckle. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means... as long as they're good-looking, I'm game," Camilla lied through her teeth. "That's just the kind of woman I am. I only married Daniel because he had a pretty face. Now that I've found out you're even better looking, I just... I couldn't control myself."

"Is that so?" Lambert smoothly tucked her feet beneath the blankets, ensuring they were fully covered, before sitting down by the edge of the bed. He leaned in, his dark eyes locked onto hers. "Then I am incredibly honored that you find me attractive."

He was so close that she could feel the faint brush of his breath. Her heart shot into her throat, and she barely dared to breathe.

"It's wonderful that you like me," he murmured. "Hurry up and finalize your divorce. Once you do..."

"No!" Panic seized her. "Even if I divorce, it's impossible for us!"

"Why?" His heavy gaze bored into her, demanding a sliver of honesty. "Didn't you just say I'm good-looking and you wouldn't be losing out?"

"I was just joking." Camilla was unraveling her own lies. "Anyway, I don't like you!"

"You just said you did."

"I only like your face..."

"Please, don't do this," she begged softly. "I'm just a normal person. I'm not that special. There are so many incredible, flawless women in your world. They..."

"I don't care about them."

Lambert let out a silent sigh. There were things he hadn't intended to say yet. He had wanted to wait until the ink on her divorce papers was dry. But she had pushed him into a corner, and there was no retreating now.

"I don't care about what you want either," Camilla stammered, terrified of hearing another confession that would shatter her resolve. "I just can't!"
