The hospital room plunged back into heavy silence.
Camilla didn't dare move. She kept her eyes screwed shut, too terrified to see the expression on Lambert's face. A man of his immense pride and status, repeatedly rejected and now told she loved someone else—he had to be furious by now, right? He would probably slam his hand against the wall and storm out in a towering rage.
If he did, her goal would be achieved.
But instead of the sound of retreating footsteps, the faint, clean scent of him washed over her. It was that distinct, cool fragrance unique to Lambert. He didn't wear cologne; the scent clung to his clothes and linens, a byproduct of custom laundry detergents his staff used. Over time, it had become his signature.
He had no idea that Camilla had absolutely zero resistance to it.
Smelling him so intensely meant he was incredibly close. She forced her eyes open in a panic. "You..."
Lambert was hovering mere inches away. If he leaned in just a fraction more, his lips would capture hers.
Camilla held her breath, unable to meet his gaze.
"Who is this man you like?" Lambert demanded softly. "Daniel?"
How could it possibly be Daniel!
Camilla shut her eyes again. She couldn't look at him, couldn't listen to that low, magnetic voice. Her heart was completely defenseless against him. Gritting her teeth, she forced the cruelty out.
"Who I like has nothing to do with you. All you need to know is that it isn't you!"
"I'd love to meet the man who's apparently so superior to me that he has Ms. Camilla Green entirely captivated."
She could hear the barely contained fury in his tone; he was practically grinding the words out.
"He might not be better than you," Camilla pressed on, desperate to burn the bridge. "But he's the one I love. Even if he were a homeless man, a beggar on the street, I'd still love him!"
