If this was true... their family had just struck gold twice!
Barbara had found a powerful man, and now Camilla had bagged an elite too. They would practically rule the city!
On her third day in the hospital, Camilla's phone rang. It was Adah.
Camilla braced herself, assuming her mother was calling to hurl insults or complain about her mood.
Instead, when the call connected, Adah's voice was disgustingly sweet—the exact tone she exclusively reserved for Barbara.
"Cammie, sweetie, why haven't you been home lately? Your dad and I are so worried about you. I made some fresh Pork Rib Soup. It's freezing outside, come home and have a warm bowl."
Adah used to say things exactly like this to Barbara all the time.
Never to Camilla.
In the past, Camilla would have been overwhelmed with gratitude and immediately bent over backward for her parents.
After all, she had spent her entire life craving their love and warmth.
But now...
She felt absolutely nothing.
"I'm... a bit tied up right now," Camilla said flatly. "I'll come visit you and Dad when I'm less busy."
Just the other day, Adah had threatened to disown her and screamed she had no daughter.
Now she was acting like Mother of the Year?
It was painfully suspicious.
Camilla thought for a moment before adding, "By the way, Daniel agreed to the divorce. We're finalizing the paperwork in a few days."
"Oh, that's wonderful! Finally!" Adah cheered. "You should have divorced a man like him ages ago! We didn't think it through before, and we let you suffer. Oh, Cammie, please don't be mad at Mom."
Even weirder.
They had been violently opposed to the divorce just days ago. What caused the sudden 180?
"You don't think they're planning to wait until your divorce is final so they can sell you off to some ugly, limping billionaire, do you?"
Catheleen read way too many romance novels and constantly came up with insane conspiracy theories.
"No way," Camilla said. "They care too much about their reputation. Plus, Daniel's background is hard to beat for an average family."
"True." Catheleen took another bite of her apple. "Then what is it? Don't tell me they suddenly grew a conscience and became good people."
"No idea." Camilla offered a faint smile. "It's probably not as dramatic as you think."
"Oh, please. Your dad is a professor who only knows how to lecture, not how to actually raise a human being. Some teacher."
"Alright, don't get worked up," Camilla soothed. "Whatever their game is, it's their business. It has nothing to do with me."
Catheleen nodded aggressively. "Exactly. Ignore them. Oh, by the way... did my brother try anything with you last night?"
The moment the question left her lips, Camilla's face flushed crimson.
Last night... Lambert had...
