Lambert adapted to their new arrangement with effortless grace. He held her hand securely, occasionally shifting to lace their fingers together, looking entirely relaxed and in his element. After walking around for a while, Camilla claimed she was tired and wanted to get back into bed. She naively assumed that once she was under the covers, she'd finally be free of his grasp. Instead, Lambert simply pulled up a chair next to the hospital bed, refusing to let go of her hand. Now that Catheleen was badgering her about what happened the night before, what was she supposed to say? She was way too mortified to breathe a word of it! No matter how hard Catheleen pressed, Camilla firmly denied that anything out of the ordinary had occurred between her and Lambert. Catheleen's absolute favorite pastimes were following celebrity gossip and binge-reading romance novels. She lived for the dramatic tropes, reading them with giddy excitement and yearning. And now, she had a real-life Domineering CEO right in front of her. Although, she firmly believed that her brother was a hundred times better than those fictional CEOs who constantly forced themselves on the heroine and drove innocent people into bankruptcy. In some of those novels, the authors treated the heroines terribly, piling on endless tragedy and abuse. The male leads were always absolute lunatics, constantly misunderstanding and humiliating the women they supposedly loved. Reading those stories always spiked Catheleen's blood pressure, making her want to scream. But she was totally addicted anyway. Now that Camilla was on the verge of a divorce, if she actually got together with Lambert, Catheleen would get front-row seats to a real-life Domineering CEO and his Pampered Young Wife. Plus, there wouldn't be any ridiculous misunderstandings, and Lambert definitely wasn't psycho enough to hurt or humiliate Camilla. She knew she'd have to endure endless PDA, but this was exactly the kind of swoon-worthy romance she dreamed of! Catheleen was practically buzzing with anticipation. But she kept her mouth shut, not wanting to put any undue pressure on Camilla. She stuck to her guns: if Camilla genuinely liked her brother, she was one hundred percent on board. But if Camilla wasn't interested, she would never force the issue. She was on Camilla's side, no matter what. Since Lambert was out for the day, Catheleen spent the entire time keeping Camilla company. It wasn't until past five in the afternoon that she finally announced she had to go. The mere thought of facing Lambert alone—and being forced to hold his hand—sent a wave of nervous panic and heat through Camilla. "Catheleen, don't leave. Can't you stay with me tonight?" "No way!" Catheleen immediately grimaced. "Cammie, my brother called me first thing this morning and told me to keep you company. I mean, I would've come anyway. But he's going to be here soon, and if I'm still hanging around... honestly, he terrifies me!" Out of options, Camilla could only beg, "Then promise you'll come early tomorrow." Catheleen squeezed her friend's hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, the second he leaves, I'll be here!" Camilla sighed in defeat. "Whenever you get here is fine, then." Catheleen tried to comfort her. "Cammie, just hang in there a little longer. Didn't the doctor say you'll be discharged in two days?" During the morning rounds, the doctor had checked her vitals and progress. She was healing beautifully. They just needed to draw some blood tomorrow for a final check, and if the results were clear, she could go home the day after. Hearing that gave Camilla a desperate sliver of hope to cling to. "On the day you're discharged... my brother will definitely be the one to bring you home," Catheleen predicted. "I'll be waiting for you at the apartment!" What else could Camilla say? She simply nodded. "Thanks, Catheleen." True to Catheleen's word, on the day of Camilla's discharge, Lambert personally handled all the paperwork and escorted her out. But halfway home, Catheleen called in an absolute panic. "Cammie, where are you? Our apartment building is on fire! It started right on the floor below ours!" Camilla was utterly stunned. Catheleen told her it wasn't safe to come back. Without missing a beat, Lambert ordered, "We're going to my place."
