"I'm just telling the truth," Lambert said, looking entirely too innocent.
Camilla hadn't wanted Catheleen to know she was staying at Lambert's penthouse.
In Catheleen's eyes, their relationship was already dangerously ambiguous.
Just the day before yesterday, the younger woman had excitedly asked if they had kissed yet.
But they weren't in that kind of relationship at all!
And now, he had just flat-out told Catheleen they were living together. What was she supposed to think?
A single man and a single woman, sharing a roof. If they claimed it was purely platonic and nothing had happened, who would believe them?
Camilla already felt guilty enough toward her roommate because she couldn't tell her the whole truth about what was going on with Lambert.
Now that he had dropped this bombshell...
She felt like she would never be able to look her friend in the eye again.
"I can't stay here anymore," she said, turning toward the bedroom. "I'm leaving."
"Cammie!"
Lambert crossed the distance in long strides and caught her hand.
"Let go." She was angry, but mostly she just felt overwhelmed. "You promised you wouldn't force me!"
"Cammie," Lambert said softly, pulling her around to face him. "Why are you upset? Why can't we tell Catheleen we're living together?"
"Because she'll get the wrong idea." Camilla took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "I don't even know how to explain this to her..."
"Why do you need to explain anything?"
"You don't have to explain because you're her brother. She looks up to you; she wouldn't dare question you. But we're friends. We share everything, and yet this..."
"Is it really that hard to talk about?" Lambert asked. "Just tell her the truth."
"And say what? That after we got inappropriately close on the yacht, I got drunk twice and groped you? Even to my best friend, I can't say that."
"Then phrase it differently."
Camilla frowned, not following. "Like what?"
But this was Lambert White.
It took every ounce of her willpower to shove down the sudden thrill and the racing of her heart.
She wasn't divorced yet. The paperwork wasn't finalized. She couldn't let anyone know that a man like Lambert was actively chasing a married woman.
"Don't say things like that," she said hurriedly. "You're not pursuing me, and we aren't..."
"Camilla." He lifted their joined hands, bringing them right in front of her eyes. "Look closely. We're holding hands."
Her mind scrambled for an excuse. "People who are just pursuing each other don't hold hands. That only happens after they're officially together!"
Lambert chuckled. "Then I guess I'm just too impatient."
With that, his thumb brushed softly across her knuckles before he reluctantly let her go.
"Then I'll wait," he murmured. "I'll wait until you agree. Then I'll hold it."
Camilla looked at him in surprise. "You really won't hold my hand anymore?"
