Latonia got there before Camilla. The door to the private dining room was cracked open, and before stepping inside, Camilla spotted Latonia just sitting there, completely lost in thought.
Usually, Latonia was all business. She had this sharp, confident vibe that made everyone instinctively trust her as a lawyer. She always seemed like the type who knew exactly what to do, no matter the situation. But right now, there was something different about her. The confusion on her face softened her whole presence, showing a side of her that was surprisingly gentle and even a little vulnerable.
“Latonia?” Camilla tapped lightly on the doorframe.
Latonia blinked and lifted her eyes.
Camilla had already taken off her down jacket at the restaurant entrance. Underneath, she wore a simple black cashmere turtleneck and light blue jeans, her feet slipped into white sneakers. She hadn’t bothered with any makeup—her skin was clear, her face fresh, her long dark hair pulled back into a quick bun. If you didn’t know her story, you might have taken her for any ordinary girl on her way to lunch.
Latonia smiled and waved her over. “Hey, Camilla, get in here.”
Camilla slipped inside and closed the door behind her. “Sorry to keep you waiting.”
Latonia patted the seat right beside her. “It’s fine, I just got here too. But I need to double-check something with you. The person you saw when you woke up yesterday… are you totally sure it was Lambert? Not just someone who looks like him?”
Camilla nodded with certainty. “I couldn’t possibly mistake him for anyone else. Lambert isn’t just about his looks—there’s something about him that you don’t forget. I’m sure I saw him.”
Latonia took a breath, her decision made. She wasn’t going to keep it to herself anymore.
“Camilla, actually, Lambert’s my cousin.”
Camilla’s jaw actually dropped as she stared, wide-eyed, looking so shocked and, honestly, kind of cute.
Now that she mentioned Catheleen, a thought struck her. “Wait—does that mean Catheleen and Lambert are related too?”
Latonia explained, “Our moms are all sisters. So yeah… that makes the three of us cousins.”
Latonia being Lambert’s cousin was surprising, but Camilla didn’t have any strong feelings about it. Finding out that Catheleen was related to Lambert, though, hit differently. Tension started brewing in her chest. All along, her plan had been to take Lambert to court—maybe even send him to prison. But now, realizing that her best friend was part of the same family… it felt like she was sending her own friend’s cousin to jail.
Latonia saw her hesitate and reached over to give her shoulder a squeeze. “Camilla, don’t let this eat at you. I know if Catheleen was in your shoes, she’d do the same thing. Just because someone’s family doesn’t mean you ignore what they’ve done.”
“I know…” Camilla whispered, shaking her head. “It’s just…”
