Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 6

Sometimes when Daniel thought back on everything, even he had to admit, he was impressed with himself.

Pulled out of his thoughts, his frustration surged again. He stalked over to Camilla, his jaw tight.

“Camilla!” His voice cut through the room.

She turned at the sound, meeting his eyes. The afternoon light caught in her hair, and for a moment Daniel hesitated—like the room had gone quiet around her.

Camilla quickly gathered up the sketches scattered across the table. “What is it?” she asked, her voice a little distant.

She wasn't happy with her work anyway. Her mind kept drifting. Honestly, she was already planning to go out and buy some fabric and thread. She wanted to make a quilt for Barbara. No matter what happened between them, she couldn't just turn her back on Barbara. After all, it was Barbara’s parents who had taken her in and raised her.

“Did you call Barbie? Did you tell her we're getting a divorce?” Daniel leaned down over the table, looking at her with that hard, insistent glare.

Camilla met his gaze without flinching. “You don’t love me. Is there even a point to staying married?”

His eyes flashed. He grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. “You think I don’t love you? Are you just figuring that out now? You never should have married me in the first place!”

She just nodded. “Yeah. I regret it.”

Daniel stared at her—really stared at her. Her face looked perfect in the sunlight, her eyelashes casting soft shadows on her cheeks. It made him feel even more restless.

“You regret it? If anyone regrets this, it should be me.” He let go of her suddenly and started pacing the room, yanking his tie loose before tossing it aside.

“If it wasn’t for you, I probably would have been with Barbie by now!”

Camilla turned, eyes drifting to the window. She spoke quietly. “She never would have chosen you.”

Camilla had never been jealous that Barbara was their parents’ real daughter. But when Barbara came back, the look she gave Camilla... it was like she was staring at an enemy, not a sister.

There were days when Camilla wondered if even her marriage to Daniel had been part of Barbara’s plan. She just couldn't figure out why Barbara would do something like that. Sure, Barbara had no interest in Daniel, but if she wanted, she could have kept him hanging—made him hope for more, just waiting in the background for her. That was something Barbara was good at. After all, it only took her one year to steal all of Camilla’s friends.

She could have left Daniel as a possible “backup” or some secret admirer. She didn’t need to push Camilla into marrying him. Why ruin that chance?

Unless there was something more.

By now, Camilla understood Barbara too well. If Barbara did something, she always had an angle. A reason.

So maybe this divorce was hitting a nerve she hadn’t noticed before. Maybe it threatened something Barbara wanted.

Camilla found herself wondering what, exactly, that could be.
