Camilla wasn’t sure if she was just imagining things, but she knew one thing for certain. Barbara didn’t like her. More than that, Barbara actually seemed to hate her.
Not that knowing this changed anything. After all, Camilla had been adopted by Barbara’s parents. It was like getting a second chance at life. Barbara, on the other hand, was their only biological child. She’d even gone missing once, and when they found her, Lean and Adah treated her like the most precious thing in the world.
Even on her worst days, Camilla never dared complain. What could she say? When they were kids, she always gave Barbara whatever she had, even without being asked. She felt sorry for Barbara, too. Life out there must’ve been really hard on her.
But along the way, Barbara somehow took everything from Camilla anyway. Back then, Camilla didn’t really get it. Now she did—but it was all too late. She had already wasted three years of her life on Daniel.
Now, finally, it could be over.
“Let’s not go there,” Camilla said as she stood up, brushing her long dress over her ankles. “Daniel, let’s get a divorce.”
“In your dreams.”
That caught her off guard. For a second, Camilla just stared at him, genuinely surprised. Shouldn’t Daniel be happy? After all this time, a divorce should be a relief.
His knee-jerk reaction surprised him, too. But Daniel caught himself quickly, his lips curling into a cold smirk. “Just because you want a divorce, we’re getting one? You think you get to decide that?”
Camilla had no intention of arguing. If she’d finally said the word ‘divorce,’ it was only after serious thought. These things never come down to one last straw—there are so many humiliations, so many silent frustrations piled up. It all added up until she finally found the courage to speak up.
“So what do you want, then? What’ll make you agree to a divorce?” she asked quietly.
Camilla closed her eyes. It wasn’t like she hadn’t heard words like this before—she’d put up with this kind of humiliation for three years. She told herself she was numb to it by now, but it still hurt, all the same.
It wasn’t about Daniel anymore. It was about the years she’d lost, about how she’d let herself live like this for so long.
Her lashes, thick and curled, cast shadows on her cheeks. Daniel, realizing he’d been staring, jerked himself back to the present, irritation bubbling up. Here she was, pulling that silent routine again. Maybe she was a little pretty, but she wasn’t even close to Barbara. Barbara was the beautiful one. He wouldn’t let himself get tricked.
“Just behave. I’m busy with work. I can’t come home every day to deal with your nonsense.” With that, Daniel turned and left.
Once she was alone, Camilla quietly unlocked her phone and messaged the shop she’d bought from before.
